Ethen Knox was named the Boys Athlete of the Year during Friday's Northwestern Pennsylvania High School Sports Awards show, presented by AHN Sports Medicine at Saint Vincent.

Knox edged out the other two finalists, Harbor Creek Senior High School's Nick Krahe and Seneca High School's Ryan Miller. Krahe was a player of the year nominee in three other sports, including football offense, boys basketball and boys track and field. Miller was a player of the year nominee in two other sports, including football defense and boys track and field.

Knox, a junior at Oil City High School, received national notoriety with his record-breaking football season this fall. He ran for a District 10 record 3,705 yards and 41 touchdowns on just 385 carries. Out of 10 games, Knox ran for more than 300 yards in nine game and out of those nine games went reached 400 yards six times. Knox continued his impressive junior year by scoring almost 10 points per game for the Oil City boys basketball team before becoming an all-region athlete in track and field. He made the first team in the 200 and second team in the 100, the 400 relay and the discus.

In all, over 300 student-athletes were honored during the show, which celebrates athletes from the entire Erie area. Twenty-two athletes were honored as Players of the Year in their respective sports and 12 premier awards were handed out, including Boys Athlete of the Year, Girls Athlete of the Year, Boys Team of the Year, Girls Team of the Year, Coach of the Year, Courage Award, Groundbreaker Award, Rookie of the Year, Lifetime Achievement Award, Small-School Varsity Cup, Large-School Varsity Cup and School Spirit Award.

The Northwestern Pennsylvania High School Sports Awards show is part of the USA Today High School Sports Awards program, the largest high school sports recognition program in the country.
