Enrique Freeman double-double leads Akron Zips men's basketball in win at Eastern Michigan
The University of Akron men's basketball team jumped out to an 8-0 lead Tuesday night and never looked back in a 77-46 win over Eastern Michigan at the George Gervin GameAbover Center in Ypsilanti.
Senior Enrique Freeman recorded a double-double with 17 points, 11 rebounds and two assists in 23 minutes to lead Akron (16-5, 8-1 Mid-American Conference). Freeman made 6 of 7 shots from the field and 5 of 6 free throws.
Akron senior Sammy Hunter and sophomore Tavari Johnson scored 12 points apiece.
Zips junior Shammah Scott contributed nine points and senior Greg Tribble Jr. had eight points, while senior Mikal Dawson and sophomore Amani Lyles both chipped in six points. Senior Ali Ali totaled five points, seven rebounds and three assists.
Tyson Acuff and Orlando Lovejoy had 12 points and two assists apiece for Eastern Michigan (9-12, 2-7).
Akron built a 42-23 halftime lead and extended its advantage in the second half.
The Zips shot 50% from the field (32-of-64). The Eagles shot 36% from the field (18-of-50). The Zips had an advantage over the Eagles in rebounds (41-21) and assists (14-4) and committed fewer turnovers (11-14).
Akron is set to host Toledo (14-7, 8-1) on Friday at 9 p.m. at Rhodes Arena. The game, featuring the top two teams in the MAC, will be televised on ESPN2 and is available on the radio at WHLO 640 AM.
