Enquirer names Greater Cincinnati high school athletes of the week, March 15

In a vote that ended March 15, Cincinnati.com readers selected the Beacon Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine Athletes of the Week from high school sports action through March 10.

The Enquirer has mailed certificates for winter winners through Feb. 9 to athletic departments. The next round will go out in mid-April.

The Beacon Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine Athlete of the Week voting occurs during all high school sports seasons and recognizes athletes across all sports. Here are this week's winners.

Ohio boys basketball team: Hamilton – The Big Blue took down Greater Miami Conference champion Sycamore 38-32 on March 10 to win the district championship.

Ohio girls basketball team: Purcell Marian – The Cavaliers advanced back to the state tournament after beating Bloom Carroll 77-43 and Badin 75-29 in the regional tournament.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys basketball team: Campbell County – The Camels dominated Bracken County in a 97-49 victory on March 7 in the 10th Region quarterfinals.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls basketball team: Cooper – The Jaguars improved to 29-4 overall after winning the Ninth Region in a 51-26 victory over Ryle.

Winter team: Oak Hills boys bowling – Oak Hills competed at the OHSAA Division I tournament on March 8, finishing 13th in the qualifying rounds.

Ohio big-school boys basketball: Marlon Reed, Hamilton – He had 12 points, including two 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, in a 38-32 win over Sycamore for Hamilton’s first district championship since 2004.

Ohio small-school boys basketball: Henry Patterson, Miami Valley Christian Academy – The senior led the team with 11 points in its loss to Troy Christian in a Division IV district final. He was a three-year starter for the Lions.

Ohio big-school girls basketball: Grace Pitzer, Mount Notre Dame – She had 14 points, four rebounds and three assists in a regional semifinal win, then had 7 points, seven rebounds and two assists in the regional championship.

Ohio small-school girls basketball: Jayda Mosley, Purcell Marian – The senior had 10 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals in a regional semifinal win, then led the Cavaliers with 18 points, five rebounds and two assists in their regional championship win.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys basketball: Taylen Kinney, Newport – He had 22 of Newport’s 45 points in the team’s narrow 45-43 win over Ryle in the Ninth Region quarterfinals.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls basketball: Sarah Baker, Ryle – She led the Raiders to a Ninth Region semifinal win with 20 points and 11 rebounds against Highlands.

Ohio boys bowler: Dawson Wagel, Oak Hills – The senior shot a three-game series of 585 (169-205-211) to lead Oak Hills in 33rd place in the Division I state tournament. Combined with senior teammate Casey Lecount, who finished one pin behind him, they helped the Highlanders finish in 13th place in the team tournament.

Ohio girls bowler: Kylie Fisher, Wilmington – The junior finished second in the Division I individual tournament with a 652 (215-193-244), one pin behind the winner. She led the Hurricane to the state semifinals in the team tournament, where they lost a tough 3-2 match to Troy. She was named first-team all-state.

Boys wrestler: Logan Dean, Bethel-Tate – In his third state tournament appearance, Dean secured his state championship with the Division III 120-pound title.

Girls wrestler: Elizabeth Madison, Loveland – The sophomore had three pins in four matches to win the 170-pound state title for her second championship.

Boys archer: Kaiden Bohn, Scott – The sophomore finished sixth at the 2024 Dixie Cup among high school boys over the weekend. Bohn had a total score of 281 with 14 tens.

Girls archer: Riley Smith, Scott – Smith placed seventh at the 2024 Dixie Cup in the high school girls competition over the weekend. She shot 277 with 13 tens and was fourth among sophomore girls.

Boys volleyball: James Steinriede, Oak Hills – The junior had 32 kills, 18 digs, four blocks and two aces in a pair of matches on March 9.
