Enquirer names Greater Cincinnati high school athletes of the week, Oct. 20

In a vote that ended Oct. 20, Cincinnati.com readers selected the Cincinnati Enquirer Athletes of the Week from high school sports action through Oct. 15.

Fall winners will receive certificates through the athletic departments about midway through the season. The remaining certificates will be mailed at the end of the season.

The Athlete of the Week voting occurs during all high school sports seasons and recognizes athletes across all sports. Here are this week's winners for the 2023-2024 high school sports season.

Ohio football team: St. Xavier – After trailing 14-0, the Bombers forced overtime to beat Cleveland St. Ignatius 21-14.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana football team: Lawrenceburg – The Tigers topped South Dearborn 42-21 in the Indiana regular-season finale.

Boys fall team: St. Xavier cross country – The Bombers won the GCL-South race, scoring 16 points while placing the top four runners and the sixth-place finisher.

Girls fall team: Lawrenceburg volleyball – The Tigers took 3-0 sweeps against South Dearborn, Connersville and Batesville to win its sectional championship.

Ohio boys cross country: Scott Schwetschenau, St. Xavier – He was the Bombers’ fifth runner at the GCL-South meet, crossing the line in sixth place at 17:11.80.

Ohio girls cross country: Delaney Cilley, Loveland – She took second place at the Eastern Cincinnati Conference meet with a time of 19:00.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys cross country: Tegan Burk, South Dearborn – He made school history as the seventh freshman to earn all-sectional status, running 17:54 for 20th place.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls cross country: Ellie Frey, Conner – The sophomore took 11th place at Woodford County with a time of 21:07.31.

Field hockey: Alex Varn, Mount Notre Dame – After recording her ninth shutout of the season last Tuesday, the goalie had the game of her career last Saturday taking on the No. 5 team from the state of Maryland. Varn recorded six saves, including two saves in overtime. She then saved three of the five strokes-penalty shots to preserve the 1-1 tie.

Ohio big-school football: Kyle Franke, Edgewood – He rushed for 157 yards and two touchdowns in the team’s 42-20 win over Franklin.

Ohio small-school football: Evan Harris, Goshen – In Goshen’s 34-31 win over Western Brown, he recovered two fumbles, intercepted a pass, and had five tackles, one for loss and passes defended.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana football: Nathan Kitchens, Simon Kenton – The senior caught four passes for 73 yards, including the game-winning touchdown on the game's last play.

Ohio boys golf: Gavin Augenstein, Springboro – Augenstein shot a 70 at the Division I district, finishing tied for second while leading Springboro to the team title.

Ohio girls golf: Debra Brogan, Oak Hills – Brogan shot a 71 at districts, finishing tied for second overall while advancing to state as an individual qualifier.

Ohio big-school boys soccer: Hamza Ibrayghith, Lakota East – The senior had a goal and three assists in a 7-2 win over Middletown.

Ohio small-school boys soccer: Graham Metz, Norwood – The junior had three goals in a 6-1 win over Clark Montessori.

Ohio big-school girls soccer: Adera Orr, Ursuline – She scored two goals against Colerain to help the Lions win, 7-0.

Ohio small-school girls soccer: Lily Hughes, New Richmond – She held down the Lions midfield with a goal, three assists, six clearances and 65 interceptions.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys soccer: Trevor Bolte, Dixie Heights – The sophomore scored three goals in the first 15 minutes to lead the Colonels to a 4-2 win over Holy Cross in the Ninth Region quarterfinals.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls soccer: Preslee Rugg, Lawrenceburg – She scored two goals against Connersville in the regional semifinals, giving her a team-high 23 after the Tigers lost to Guerin Catholic in the regional final to finish 19-2-1.

Girls singles tennis player: Caroline Boyle, Badin – She finished third in the Division II district singles tournament to advance to this week’s state tournament.

Girls doubles tennis team: Ella Malafa/Lucy Glassmeyer, Mariemont – They finished second in the Division II district doubles tournament to qualify for this week’s state tournament.

Ohio big-school volleyball: Grace Miller, Edgewood – She had 24 assists, 10 digs and two blocks in a four-set win over Franklin.

Ohio small-school volleyball: Evie Schiller, Madeira – In three wins last week, the freshman had 28 digs, 19 kills and nine aces.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana volleyball: Ava Crowl, Campbell County – She had 13 digs, nine assists and three kills against Harrison County.
