Enquirer names Greater Cincinnati high school athletes of the week, May 5

Mariemont goalie Brynna O'Brien allowed just one goal in the second half as the Warriors cruised past CHCA, 18-7, in the DII regional semifinals on May 23, 2023.

In a vote that ended May 5, Cincinnati.com readers selected the Cincinnati Enquirer Athletes of the Week from high school sports action through April 30.

Winter and spring winners through April 7 should have received certificates through the athletic departments at this point.

The Athlete of the Week voting occurs during all high school sports seasons and recognizes athletes across all sports. Here are this week's winners.

Ohio baseball team of the week: Loveland – Loveland jumped over .500 to 10-9 after beating Kings twice, McNicholas and Turpin over the week.

Northern Kentucky baseball team of the week: Highlands – Highlands moved to 16-9 for the year after a 5-0 week, beating Lloyd, Dayton, Bellevue, Scott and Boone County.

Ohio softball team of the week: Mount Notre Dame – The Cougars locked up a solo Girls Greater Catholic League title after beating Mercy McAuley, Ursuline Academy and Seton to move to 7-0 in the conference.

Northern Kentucky softball team of the week: Lloyd Memorial – The Juggernauts went 3-0 over the week, topping Holmes 20-7, St. Henry 12-7 and Calvary Christian 16-8.

Boys spring team of the week: Williamsburg track – Williamsburg hosted the Williamsburg Invitational and won the event with 106 points scored.

Girls spring team of the week: St. Henry tennis – St. Henry has won seven-straight matches after beating Beechwood, Walton-Verona and Boone County to extend the streak.

Ohio big-school baseball player of the week: Grant Garrett, St. Xavier – The senior went 2-for-4 with two doubles, three RBIs and scored a run in St. Xavier’s 15-4 win over Princeton April 29.

Ohio small-school baseball player of the week: Aiden Pippin, Wyoming – The junior went 5-for-5 with a double and two RBIs in Wyoming’s 12-4 win over Western Brown April 25.

Northern Kentucky baseball player of the week: Logan Weber, Highlands – He struck out 11 batters in five innings against Boone County while only allowing one hit and no walks or runs. He had a total of 20 strikeouts last week.

Ohio big-school softball player of the week: Blythe Partin, Ursuline – The freshman has had 15 runs, 14 hits, a double, 7 RBIs, and 9 stolen bases so far this season.

Ohio small-school softball player of the week: Kenzie Gillen, Bethel-Tate – The sophomore led the team in hitting by batting .692 with .714 OBP. She went 5-for-5 vs Georgetown in the 22-0 shutout on April 24, 3-for-4 vs CNE and 1-for-4 vs Felicity totaling 9 hits in 13 at-bats with one triple and zero strikeouts. She scored six runs with 2 RBIs. The shortstop had no errors and caught two runners stealing.

Northern Kentucky softball player of the week: Rosemary Rice, Villa Madonna – Last week, she hit .538 with five RBIs and six walks/ hit by pitch.

Ohio boys big-school lacrosse player of the week: Logan Mebius, Anderson – The senior had three goals, one assist and seven ground balls in the 10-9 win over Walnut Hills April 26.

Ohio boys small-school lacrosse player of the week: Evan Morgan, Mariemont – The senior had four goals and three assists in the 15-5 win over Turpin April 28.

Ohio girls big-school lacrosse player of the week: Sophie Canter, St. Ursula Academy – The senior had nine goals in the two wins over Mount Notre Dame (12-7, April 26) and Seton (15-11 April 24).

Ohio girls small-school lacrosse player of the week: Brynna O’Brien, Mariemont – She held Mason, which averages 14.4 goals per game, to only seven goals in an 18-7 win over the Comets. She had 13 saves on 20 shots for a 65% save rate and got five ground balls to lead the Warriors in the win.

Northern Kentucky boys lacrosse player of the week: Jackson Geotz, Dixie Heights – The senior had three goals and three assists for six points in the 12-9 win over Ryle April 26.

Ohio boys singles tennis player of the week: Jackson Burke, Colerain – Burke claimed the first singles title of Flight J in the Coaches Classic.

Ohio boys doubles tennis team of the week: Aiden Bryant/Wyatt Zimmerman, Goshen – The two helped lead Goshen to the win in the Coaches Classic’s Flight I while being champs of second doubles.

Northern Kentucky boys tennis player of the week: Will Kreutzjans, Covington Catholic – He defeated his first singles opponent from St. Henry in straight sets.

Northern Kentucky girls tennis player of the week: Annika Derks, Simon Kenton – She and doubles partner Nick McIntosh went undefeated in the Frontier Challenge Co-Ed Invitational to help the Pioneers win the team title.

Ohio boys track and field athlete of the week: Micah Katz, Cincinnati Christian – He won both the 800 meters and 1,600 meters at Seven Hills.

Ohio girls track and field athlete of the week: Lizzy Cahall, Georgetown – She set a school record in the 800 meters with a time of 2:26.07 at Milford.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys track and field athlete of the week: Marcelo Herald, Bellevue – The sophomore finished first in the high jump, long jump and 200 and earned a third-place finish in the triple jump. This led him to be the 2023 Division III athlete of the year.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls track and field athlete of the week: Rylee Swope, Highlands – She won the discus and shot put at the Campbell County championships. She threw the discus 106 feet, 2 inches and hurled the shot 32 feet, 7.72 inches.

Boys volleyball player of the week: Evan Tombragel, Walnut Hills – The senior had 25 kills in a three-set sweep of Loveland before adding 16 more in a win over Roger Bacon.
