Joseph Gomez Whitten wins El Paso Times' Jarritos High School Athlete of the Week
Joseph Gomez-Whitten of Parkland track and field is this week's El Paso Times' Jarritos Athlete of the Week. He won the 100 and 200 meters at the District 1-5A/2-5A area track and field meet.
Here are this week's top four vute getters:
Joseph-Gomez Whitten, Parkland track and field, 45.48 percent
Ian Melendez, Canutillo baseball, 26.04 percent
Salvador Duarte, Austin track and field, 12.66 percent
Juliana Patton, Burges track and field, 11.51 percent
The El Paso Times will be honoring high school athletes this year on a weekly basis that you, the readers, help determine. We will be taking weekly nominations and will release a list of finalists for the Jarritos High School Athlete of the Week at 2 p.m. each Tuesday.
Students in all varsity sports are eligible to be nominated. The poll will close at 2 p.m. Thursday and the winners will be announced Friday each week.
Nominations are due by 5 p.m. Monday and can be submitted through email at fchavez@elpasotimes.com or by contacting Felix Chavez through social media on X (formerly Twitter).
Here are this week's nominees:
Ian Melendez, Canutillo baseball. He hit three home runs in win vs. El Paso High and had two hits against Burges.
Evan Martinez, Ysleta baseball. Martinez hit for the cycle in win vs. Hanks on Friday.
Javier Hernandez, Fabens baseball. He had seven hits, six runs scored, three stolen bases and a home run.
Francisco Marquez, San Elizario boys soccer. He scored the winning goal in the Class 4A state title game against Boerne.
Joseph Gomez-Whitten, Parkland track and field. He won the 100 and 200 meters at the District 1-5A/2-5A area track and field meet.
Salvador Duarte, Austin track and field. He won the 100 and 200 meterts at the District 1-4A/2-4A track and field meet.
Yakira DeRouen, Chapin track and field. She won the 200 meters and triple jump at the District 1-5A/2-5A area track and field meet.
Juliana Patton, Burges track and field. She won the long jump, the 100 meter hurdles and the 300 meter hurdles at the District 1-5A/2-5A area track and field meet.
