Edwardsburg wins MHSAA boys soccer district championship

The Edwardsburg boys soccer team brought home some hardware Thursday night, defeating Sturgis, 5-1, in a rain-soaked Division 2, District 17 championship game at Lakeshore High School.

The Eddies (13-6) picked up two goals from Owen Kertes and one each from Dion Sokhadze, Grayson Herbert and Annon Billingsley. Dane Bryant assisted on both of Kertes’ goals, Sokhadze and Billingsley’s were unassisted, and Herbert’s came on a penalty kick.

The victory was almost a complete reversal from the regular season, as Sturgis defeated Edwardsburg, 4-1, on Oct. 4 on its way to the Wolverine Conference championship. The district championship loss was the first defeat for Sturgis all season.

Edwardsburg beat Lakeshore, 1-0, in the district opener last Wednesday before beating Saint Joseph by that same margin in the semi-finals Tuesday. Herbert scored in the win over Lakeshore, with Mobius Stubblefield providing the goal against Saint Joseph.

The win advances the Eddies to the District 2, Regional 5 semifinals. They will play Plainwell (13-8-1) Tuesday at Gull Lake High School in Richland, about 10 miles northwest of Kalamazoo. They will play at 5 p.m., with the other semifinal between DeWitt (12-5-2) and Holland Christian (16-1-2) to follow. The championship game will be played Thursday at 6 p.m.
