Will This Edible Blob Replace Your Water Bottle?

Meet the Ooho, a bubble-like membrane designed to replace your plastic water bottle. Three London industrial design students recently introduced the Ooho in an effort to deliver quick hydration with less waste.

The Ooho is completely edible, so athletes can just toss one into their mouths for a quick burst of hydration. If you’d rather not eat it, you can simply tear a hole in it and drink. You can also feel comfortable throwing it away, since it biodegrades far more quickly than typical plastic water bottles.

The Ooho's membrane is made from brown algae and calcium chloride. It’s held together through “spherification,” a culinary technique developed in the 1940s to shape liquid into spheres that resemble caviar.

"Anyone can make them in their kitchen, modifying and innovating the recipe," Rodrigo García Gonzalez, one of the co-designers, told the Huffington Post. "It's not DIY but CIY—cook it yourself."

For athletes, the Ooho could provide a less wasteful solution to portable hydration at practices and games. And as other sites have reported, the containers could also be used in place of cups at road races.
