Ed Orgeron on QB Battle: “Let the best man win.”

Tigers head coach Ed Orgeron commented recently on the ongoing QB battle, and solidified what we all assumed.

The LSU starting quarterback competition is down to Myles Brennan and Max Johnson.

Early on in the offseason and at the start of spring practices, the quarterback competition was a four-man marathon between Max Johnson, Myles Brennan, TJ Finley, and Garrett Nussmeier.

Johnson and Brennan were the odds on favorites, and they both lived up to those odds.

TJ Finley announced he was entering the transfer portal earlier this month, and that made it pretty clear that Johnson and Brennan had separated themselves from the group as the clear cut top two quarterbacks.

Ed Orgeron made a radio appearance this week, via 104.5 ESPN in Baton Rouge. Orgeron discussed the Tigers’ quarterback situation and spoke on where Brennan and Johnson stand currently.

“Those guys are neck-and-neck right now.” Orgeron said. “Two great quarterbacks and I believe in both of them.”

“Let the best man win.” Orgeron added. “We will go through camp, and we will decide towards the end of camp who is the best quarterback for our football team.”

The starting quarterback battle is an important storyline to watch for the Tigers this season. LSU is looking for a bounce back season, and that starts with more consistent and efficient play from their starting quarterback.

Myles Brennan is the more experienced player and many view him as the favorite, yet Max Johnson had a few spectacular moments and could provide this LSU offense with a new spark if he can piece everything together and win the starting job.

Big decisions ahead for this 2021 LSU Tigers football team.
