East Lansing's Cam Hutson, KJ Torbert named Division 1 first team all-state

The East Lansing boys basketball boys basketball team proved it was one of the state's top teams this winter.

The Michigan High School Athletic Association's MPR computer rankings gave the Trojans the second-best rating of all teams regardless of division based on their success and the success of their opponents.

And it was Division I prospects Cam Hutson and KJ Torbert who played big roles in East Lansing's strong season.

Both were recognized for their play with selections to first team all-state in Division 1 by the Associated Press. The duo helped East Lansing to a 24-3 mark that included CAAC Blue, district and regional championships. The Trojans made the deepest state tournament run by a Greater Lansing boys team, getting to the quarterfinals before being stopped by Ann Arbor Huron.

Hutson earned first team all-state accolades after averaging 17.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 1.5 steals. The 6-foot-6 junior guard surpassed 1,000 career points during the Trojans' state tournament run and owns college offers from Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Western Michigan, Miami (Ohio), Toledo and Robert Morris.

Torbert, a 6-foot-3 sophomore guard, averaged 17.4 points, 5.8 rebounds and 2.5 steals. He picked up a college offer from Toledo during the season.

Orchard Lake St Mary's junior Trey McKenney was voted the Division 1 player of the year. He helped lead St. Mary's to a state championship.
