East Hartford comes from behind to stun Bloomfield

It was a tough loss for Bloomfield after being ahead for a large portion of the game, but East Hartford’s two late goals stole the win for the Hornets, as the two girls’ soccer teams played a nail-biter on Oct. 11.

With 18:17 left in the first half, Bloomfield senior captain Sianna Lloyd launched a shot from 20 yards out near the wing that curled away from East Hartford goalie Malonia Jackson and tucked itself inside the top of the net.

With the clock at 31:09 in the second half, East Hartford’s Swathi Ganesh took a shot that also took an unusual arc but found the netting, tying the game.

It wasn’t until 1:54 left in the game that East Hartford’s Meghan Moore chipped a moon shot from nearly the same spot as Lloyd, which arched higher than it traveled horizontally, but just over the head of Bloomfield keeper Olivia Moses, sealing the win for the Hornets.

East Hartford coach Everton Richards agreed that Moore’s goal was different.

“It was a wild goal. It was unexpected, but it went in,” he said.

Some halftime words may also have helped the Hornets find another gear.

“All season long, we’ve been a second half team,” Richards said. “At halftime, I gave them a little pep talk and told them, ‘Let’s play with intensity, and the goals will come.'”

Richards said his four seniors have lead the way for the team, including the game’s two goal-scorers.

“They’re the ones who have stepped up,” Richards said.

Moses had nine saves. Jackson had six.

East Hartford improved to 3-6-1. Bloomfield fell to 4-5.

Everton said his team is still working on the basics, but showing improvement every day.

“Fundamentals. We have a young crew and they aren’t really that experienced, so we just work on the fundamentals, and teach them the basics of the game,” he said.
