Eagles 53-man roster cuts tracker: Late trade for a TE, while LB and punter are waived

PHILADELPHIA − The Eagles, like every NFL team, have until Tuesday at 4 p.m. to cut their roster from 90 down to 53.

For the Eagles, that process began Saturday. But there's much more to it than just deciding on which 37 players to place on waivers or release.

Eagles GM Howie Roseman is known for making trades. Last year, he acquired safety Chauncey Gardner-Johnson on cutdown day, and the Eagles then released safety Anthony Harris.

Injuries and the practice squad also have to be taken into account. If the Eagles wanted to put a player on short-term injured reserve, meaning they can return after missing four games, they must be on the initial 53-man roster.

Also, any player placed on waivers is eligible for the 16-man practice squad, but that player can also be signed to another team's 53-man roster. That's why players who survive the initial roster cut could still be jettisoned if the Eagles decide to add a player waived by another team.

Here, then, is a list of players waived or released as the Eagles get down to the 53-man limit, according to confirmation from the Eagles and reports from the NFL Network, ESPN and others.

Eagles no longer have a punter

The Eagles are releasing punter Arryn Siposs, according to a report from Derek Gunn. Siposs, who had been the Eagles' punter for the previous 2 seasons, had won a competition with Ty Zentner earlier in camp. But Siposs' position still seemed tenuous.

The Eagles will look to sign a punter off the waiver wire. And there should be some available.

Siposs averaged 45.6 yards per punt last season. He missed six weeks with a broken ankle. He returned for the Super Bowl, but his fourth-quarter punt traveled just 38 yards, and Kansas City's Kadarius Toney returned it 65 yards to the Eagles' 5 yard line. The Chiefs eventually scored a touchdown that gave them an 8-point lead.

Eagles make a trade

The Eagles traded for Broncos tight end Albert Okwuegbunam on Tuesday, just minutes before the 4 p.m. roster deadline. The Eagles also got a seventh-round pick in 2025 from Denver while giving up their sixth-round pick that year. Okwuegbunam was the Broncos' fourth-round pick in 2020. He had 10 catches for 95 yards last season. His best season was in 2021 when he had 33 catches for 330 yards.

Eagles waive a linebacker expected to start

The Eagles are waiving linebacker Nicholas Morrow, whom they signed in free agency last March as a starter opposite Nakobe Dean. The Philadelphia Inquirer first reported the news.

But the Eagles clearly weren't happy with Morrow when they signed veteran free agents Zach Cunningham and Myles Jack three weeks ago. Before long, Cunningham was getting the first-team reps next to Dean.

Trey Sermon waived; Boston Scott staying?

The Eagles pared their running back room to four after reportedly waiving Trey Sermon. Sermon was the 49ers' third-round pick in 2021. The 49ers waived him last summer and the Eagles claimed him and kept him on their roster all season.

But the Eagles added two veteran running backs in D'Andre Swift and Rashaad Penny last spring to replace Miles Sanders, who ran for 1,269 yards last season. The Eagles also had Kenny Gainwell and Boston Scott returning. Sermon led the Eagles in rushing during the three preseason games with 105 yards on 30 carries. He had by far the most carries on the team.

Eagles cutting 4 WRs as Tuesday cuts begin

The Eagles are moving on from wide receivers Greg Ward, Britain Covey and Devon Allen, according to reports. Later in the day, the Eagles waived another wide receiver in Joseph Ngata, an undrafted free agent from Clemson.

Allen, the Olympic 110 meter hurdler had 3 catches for 28 yards. But he also showed his breakaway speed by returning the opening kickoff 73 yards last week against Indianapolis.

Allen would be a candidate for the Eagles' practice squad if he makes it through waivers. Ward, meanwhile, led the Eagles in the preseason games with 8 catches for 82 yards. Of course, the top four receivers did not play in any of the three games. Ward has been with the Eagles, off and on, since 2017.

Covey was the Eagles' punt returner last season. But he has dealt with a hamstring injury for most of camp. Covey could also make it to the practice squad.

More players waived Tuesday

The Eagles also waived safety K'Von Wallace, defensive end Tarron Jackson, a sixth-round pick in 2021, who spent most of last season on the practice squad; defensive back Josiah Scott, offensive lineman Julian Good-Jones, tight end Brady Russell. In addition nose tackle Noah Elliss was waived with an injury designation.

Derek Barnett wants a trade, report

Defensive end Derek Barnett, the Eagles' first-round pick in 2017, is apparently seeking a trade, according to a report by ESPN's Jeremy Fowler on Monday. Barnett is expected to make the 53-man roster, but he would be part of a deep rotation that includes Haason Reddick, Brandon Graham, Josh Sweat and first-round pick Nolan Smith.

According to the report, Barnett wants to go to a team where he can play more. Barnett missed all of last season with a torn ACL. But he has made a full recovery. It's possible that the Eagles could release him if they don't get a trade offer to their liking.

Barnett, in the final year of his contract, could have trade value.

Ian Book, quarterback

Book served as the Eagles' third quarterback last season. But rookie Tanner McKee, the Eagles' sixth-round pick, clearly passed him on the depth chart as the third-string QB. Book never appeared in a game for the Eagles.

Tyree Jackson, tight end

Jackson was a quarterback in college, but converted to tight end after signing a futures contract with the Eagles in Jan. 2021. He got into 14 games over two seasons with the Eagles, with all 3 receptions for 22 yards coming in 2021.

Dan Arnold, tight end

The Eagles signed Arnold during the offseason after he had spent the previous five seasons with four other teams. He played in all 17 games last season with Jacksonville, with 9 catches for 135 yards.

Johnny King, wide receiver

The Eagles signed King on Aug. 9 after he was with Indianapolis as an undrafted rookie free agent. He had 2 catches for 54 yards in the preseason games.

OL Dennis Kelly, Josh Andrews, Brett Toth, Tyrese Robinson

Kelly was the Eagles' fifth-round pick in 2012. He spent last season with Indianapolis, starting three games. He has played in 130 games overall. Andrews was originally signed by the Eagles as an undrafted free agent in 2014. He was with New Orleans last season. Toth was with the Eagles in 2020 and '21, and spent last season on physically unable to perform list.

OL Cameron Tom, WR Deon Cain

Both Tom and Cain spent at least part of last season on the Eagles' practice squad.
