Eagle-Gazette’s Tom Wilson honored by the Ohio Prep Sportswriters Association

COLUMBUS – Longtime Lancaster Eagle-Gazette sports reporter Tom Wilson was recognized as one of the top sportswriters in the state when the Ohio Prep Sportswriters Association announced the winners of its annual writing contest on Monday.

Wilson, a sportswriter at the Eagle-Gazette for almost 10 years, won first place in Division 2-3 (combined) Game Stories coverage.

The contest included submissions from the 2023 calendar year and was judged by OPSWA members. There were four writing categories in three divisions based on circulation size. Each category was judged by two members from another division. Writers and photographers were judged on a body of work that included three submissions per category.

Wilson’s three submitted Game coverage stories, included Fairfield Union boys’ basketball overtime win over Gallipolis, Fisher Catholic girls' basketball heartbreaking loss against Portsmouth Notre Dame, and Bloom-Carroll football thrilling last-second playoff win over Jackson.

OPSWA membership now stands at 218 writers and photographers around the state. Founded in 1972, the Ohio Prep Sportswriters Association works to support and enhance the coverage of high school sports in Ohio and to recognize superior writing among sports journalists.
