E/K-M girls hoops beats Washburn 60-49

Dec. 8—JAMESTOWN — Despite Washburn High School's best efforts, the Edgeley/Kulm-Montpelier Rebels were able to hold on to a 60-49 win on Friday, Dec. 8, at the Jamestown Civic Center.

The Cardinals (1-2) got out to a 6-3 start but the Rebels (2-1) very quickly responded with a 13-0 run through midway into the second quarter when the Rebels took a 16-6 lead. The run was ended by a Cardinals free throw with 7:31 to go in the opening half to cut it to 16-7. Both teams got to the line with regularity in the first half as the Rebels went 4-for-10 from the stripe and the Cardinals went 7-for-13 from the line.

The Rebels were led in the first half by Mataeya Mathern who had 13 including a buzzer-beating three to end the first half up 32-18.

"It was a boost just because you saw how we started the third," Rebels head coach Rory Entzi said. "We started the third pretty well. So, big players make big plays. Sometimes you just get out of the way as a coach and let players play."

The Rebels were able to stretch the lead out even further to 46-26 with 2:07 to go in the third quarter. Over the remainder of the quarter, the Cardinals were able to cut the deficit to 47-34 before the Rebels stretched it back out again to 51-37. However, the Cardinals brought it back to within single digits at 58-49. The Rebels were able to hang on from there though and get the win.

"We applied some full-court pressure and we hit some baskets," Cardinals head coach Jarod Obering said. "We're a team that's still trying to figure out our exact identity on defense. So, offensively, we're figuring some things out. I probably have to do a better job of adjusting our defense during the game to see what makes sense against an opponent."

The Rebels are back in action at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 9, when they take on Carrington High School.
