The drought is over: Pete Alonso hits first HRs in nearly three weeks as Mets lead Yankees

NEW YORK — Pete Alonso might have finally turned a corner.

Alonso snapped a 12-game homerless drought with a three-run home run off Yankees starting pitcher Domingo German on a hanging changeup in the top of the third inning on Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium. Then, in his very next at-bat in the top of the sixth inning, Alonso drilled a fastball from German over the wall in straightaway center field.

Alonso singlehandedly provided the Mets a 5-0 lead over Yankees with his 27th and 28th home runs of the season and an RBI bloop single in the top of the first inning.

"Today was my day," Alonso said. "Tomorrow I want to win as many pitches as possible. Be early, be relaxed, be on time."

The Mets would collect back-to-back home runs with Daniel Vogelbach clobbering a hanging curveball 406 feet into the right-field bleachers.

Alonso had not homered since July 6 against the Diamondbacks, going 45 at-bats without a home run. Alonso also added an RBI bloop single in the top of the first inning to drive in all four of the Mets' runs after three innings.

"There’s a lot of work, not just physically but mentally that was put in in order to get to this point," Alonso said. "Every player, what you see in the game, is all the hours and dedication that you don’t see behind the scenes. I’m just really happy that I can finally see the fruits of my labor. Yeah, it’s nice. Really, really nice."

The pair of home runs give Alonso eight all-time against the Yankees.

Alonso had been struggling since landing on the 10-day injured list with a bone bruise and sprain of his left wrist after being hit by the Braves' Charlie Morton on June 6. Between his return from the injury on June 18 to the All-Star break, Alonso was slashing .147/.264/.347 with four home runs, 12 RBI and 11 runs.

Now, in the last two series against the Red Sox and Yankees, Alonso is 8-for-16 with two home runs, a triple, two doubles, five runs and five RBI.

"There’s a lot of deep diving into scouting reports, watching video, putting in the work in the cage, putting in the work on the field for batting practice," Alonso said of trying to break out of a slump. "There’s a ton of stuff that you have to do within the two and a half, three and a half hours of a baseball game. That’s what all the hours and all of the studying of your opponent, that’s where all the cage work, all the time, that’s where you hope to see rewards."
