What Nashville Predators' dramatic 5-4 win over Vegas says about chances for NHL playoff run

In a streak where the Nashville Predators have looked unstoppable, their 5-4 overtime win over Vegas on Tuesday night may be the most impressive yet.

It also says the most about their chances of making a deep run in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Down 4-1 in the third period against a desperate Golden Knights team, the Predators scored three times in an eight minute span—one goal each from their dynamic top scoring line: Ryan O'Reilly, Filip Forsberg and then Gustav Nyquist.

The Nyquist goal came at a crucial moment, with the Predators capitalizing on a power play following a failed offside review challenge by Vegas head coach Bruce Cassidy.

That goal ignited the Bridgestone Arena crowd, and it set the stage for Roman Josi's thrilling drive to the net in overtime to win the game 5-4.

The Predators have star players to carry a playoff run

Every playoff team needs its star players to show up. For Nashville, that includes Filip Forsberg and Roman Josi.

During this 18-game point streak, Forsberg and Josi have been Nashville's best players. Josi has 24 points, including eight goals, while Forsberg has 28 points, including 15 goals.

"He's been phenomenal," Predators coach Andrew Brunette said of Roman Josi, who finished with the game-winning goal and 14 shot attempts. "In my opinion, he's the best defenseman in the league."

While other players have contributed to this brilliant and surprising Predators season, those two will be the reason why Nashville can go on a deep playoff run.

Nashville can score itself out of trouble

All good playoff teams need an offense that can save them when their defense makes mistakes.

You can't march through the Stanley Cup Playoffs on goaltending alone. See previous Nashville Predators teams as prime examples of this.

Nyquist's power play goal on Tuesday is a good example. With Vegas (39-25-8) handing Nashville (43-25-4) an opportunity to seize control of the game, Nyquist capitalized.

Those pivotal moments only come a few times in the regular season. But in the playoffs? They come several times every game.

This Predators team is showing they have the ability to rise to the occasion.

Adversity happens in the playoffs, just like it did on Tuesday.

The Predators were down 3-0 early in the game, then 4-1 going into the third period.

"We're gonna have games that we're behind," Brunette said after the game. "But how are we going to respond? I thought we responded the right way tonight."

Throughout the point streak, the Predators have played in blowouts, close games, overtime games, and now come-from-behind games. They've been exposed to all the scenarios you need a team to be accustomed to heading into the playoffs.

"Every challenge presents an opportunity to get better," Brunette said. "And we've been responding to those challenges every night."
