Dorman football names Wofford Hall of Famer and assistant coach as offensive coordinator

Wofford Hall of Famer and assistant football coach Dane Romero is leaving the Terriers to be offensive coordinator at Dorman, the school announced Tuesday on social media.

Romero was on the Wofford staff for nine seasons, the first seven as running backs coach. He was most recently the school's tight ends coach.

Under his leadership, the Terriers in 2018 and 2019 ranked among the top five rushing teams in the country and won a pair of Southern Conference championships.

Romero as a senior running back in 2008 ran for 1,078 yards and 22 touchdowns, one shy of the Wofford all-time single-season record held by Shawn Graves. Romero was named FCS (Division I-AA) All-America and all-Southern Conference. He is No. 15 in program history with 1,954 career rushing yards.

Romero, a Cincinnati native, joined the Wofford Athletics Hall of Fame in 2014.

He came to Wofford as a quarterback but switched to fullback as a freshman and then to a mostly blocking wingback in the Terriers' option offense before becoming their main ball-carrier.

Dorman’s offense this season ranked last among Region 2-AAAAA teams for scoring in league games (17.0 points per game) and overall (19.5). That was a significant drop from 2022, when the Cavaliers averaged 36.8 and 36.3, respectively.

Dorman went 3-8 this season for first-year head coach Jake Morris and never scored 30 points in a game under coordinator Stephen Cagle, former head coach at Ben Lippen School in Columbia. The Cavaliers lost to Byrnes, 44-17, in the first round of the high school football playoffs.
