‘I don’t worry about what people think. I know what we can do:’ Jimbo Fisher speaks before Aggies’ 17th fall camp practice

As the start of the 2023 college football season draws near for Texas A&M football, Head Coach Jimbo Fisher once again took the podium on Monday for his weekly press conference.

After the Aggies held their second fall camp scrimmage this past Saturday, Fisher spoke on his assessment of the team during that aforementioned scrimmage, while highlighting the handful of true freshmen such as offensive lineman Chase Bisontis and linebacker Taurean York who continue to impress and perform beyond their years. Fisher also addressed the versatile skillset that the Maroon and White have in their running back room, which will be a key group to follow throughout the 2023 campaign.

Naturally, Fisher addressed the ongoing position battle at quarterback between sophomore Conner Weigman and senior Max Johnson. In what has felt like the worst kept secret, both signal-callers have battled neck-and-neck for the starting job with the consensus belief that a decision on the starter will ultimately be made right up to the buzzer before Texas A&M’s Week 1 opener versus New Mexico on Sep. 2nd.

Below is Jimbo Fisher’s full press conference video from Kyle Field Media Center on Monday, as well as notable highlights from his time at the podium.

“It’s like watching two great boxers go at it. One guy wins one round, and the other wins the next. I like watching these guys compete. Your good players and teams when they’re like that do that a lot.”

As the saying goes, "iron sharpens iron"

“Only in one practice or two has one side really got the best of the other. You’re going to get stumped. Somebody is going to make plays against you, whether you’re on offense or defense. Minimizing the damage is what you want to see.”

In addition to the physicality, Jimbo loves the execution during scrimmages

“Good. Very physical. I thought the physicality was good on both lines of scrimmage. There was more consistency, which I like to see, in the execution of plays on both sides of the ball.”

Spoiler alert: no update (yet) on Texas A&M's QB1 for 2023

“Administratively, I can spend more time on certain things that I was back and forth on before. It also frees you up at times to expand on offensive stuff.”

Coaching up players one-on-one has been a benefit for Jimbo through camp

“You have more time to meet with players privately. You have a lot more time to talk to players. You get to know them better, and you can share specific things I see… It allows you coach as much or maybe even more.”

Much like this Aggies team as a whole, Jimbo is blocking out the noise

“Those things all still come to us and what we do. There will be other people we bring in for those roles… We can still operate because it’s just a faction that’s under us and what we want to do it.”

Among the Aggies RBs, Jimbo made sure to shout out Marquel Blackwell

“You saw the backs run well. All those guys have talent… I was very pleased with our backs, and they can catch and block. Marquel (Blackwell) has done well with that group… Those guys had a really good day on Saturday.”

Freshman LB Tauren York is another example of someone wise beyond their years

“Very mature. He’s a kid that is 18 going on 30, and I say that from a standpoint of how he learns and how he acts. He’s a very intelligent guy and a very well-rounded guy that has had a very good camp. A true freshman that can make calls for you.”

Echoing his comments from talkin' season, Jimbo loves the development from the groups in the trenches

“I’m pleased with our offensive line development. I’m pleased with our defensive line development. You’re setting in and now playing with consistency. To play with consistency, everybody has to do their job.”
