What does Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine predict for local teams and athletes?

Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine has been landing in mailboxes across the state for premium subscribers and will soon be available for sale in magazine racks.

If you’re not so lucky to have received your copy yet, here’s a quick preview of what the magazine has to say about teams and athletes for the TRN Sports coverage area.

HIGH SCHOOL

*Page 32: Elijah Jackson is listed among the Texas Top 300 college prospects as a running back from Archer City. However, Jackson enrolled at Rider during the spring semester. He had previously enrolled at Wichita Falls High but briefly returned to Archer City before again transferring to Rider.

*Page 171: A full-page photo of Vernon’s Adarius Williams is featured, introducing the high school section of the magazine.

*Page 182: Newcastle head football coach Isiah Archer is featured as one of Texas Football’s 40 under 40 — a section dedicated to some of the best young coaches in the state.

*Page: 235: Rider defensive lineman Jailyn Gibbs was selected to DCTF’s Class 5A Preseason All-State Team. On that same page, Rider’s district, 2-5A Division II, is listed as one of three to watch.

*Page 257: This is District 2-5A Division II preview where Rider is chosen to finish second behind Abilene Wylie. The rest of the district is predicted to finish in this order — Abilene Cooper, Amarillo Palo Duro, Plainview and Lubbock High. Gibbs is chosen as the district’s Preseason Defensive MVP.

*Page 277: The Class 4A preseason rankings feature three local teams, including two from WFISD. Wichita Falls High is ranked 20th in 4A Division I, and Hirschi is seeded 12th and Graham 22nd in Division II.

*Page 279: Old High senior defensive back Ivy Kelley was selected to DCTF’s Class 4A Preseason All-State team.

*Page 281: The District 4-4A Division I preview picks WFHS to finish second behind Region I-4A favorite Decatur. Burkburnett is slated to finish third with Springtown and Mineral Wells picked fourth and fifth, respectively. Kelley was chosen as the Preseason Defensive MVP.

*Page 290: The District 3-4A Division II preview predicts Hirschi and Graham finishing first and second, respectively. Graham senior Peyton Kinman is the Preseason Offensive MVP, while Hirschi senior Javian Frazier is Preseason Defensive MVP.

*Page 303: Holliday is ranked 8th and Jacksboro 16th in the Class 3A Division II preseason rankings.

*Page 305: Holliday is picked to lose to Gunter in the Region II-3A Division II final. It’s an all-too-familiar projection for the Eagles.

*Page 307: The District 3-3A Division I preview predicts a third-place finish for Iowa Park, fourth for Vernon and sixth for Bowie. Jim Ned was chosen as the district favorite, with Breckenridge picked second. Clyde rounds out the predictions in fifth.

*Page 318: The District 5-3A Division II and 6-3A Division II previews are on the same page. Jacksboro is picked second behind Comanche in 5-3A D-II. Eastland, Millsap, Merkel and Dublin round out the prediction in that order. Jacksboro junior defensive back Cannon Valenzuela was chosen as Preseason Defensive MVP.

Holliday is picked to win another 6-3A Division II title with City View chosen second. Henrietta is picked fourth behind Callisburg in third. Valley View and S&S Consolidated are ranked fifth and sixth, respectively. Holliday junior Tyrese Polite was picked as Preseason Offensive MVP.

*Page 331: Three teams from District 7-2A Division II are ranked in the Class 2A Division II preseason poll. Windthorst leads the way at No. 14 with Seymour at No. 19 and Archer City ranked 25th.

*Page 333: Archer City defensive lineman Evonjre Donnell was named to DCTF’s Class 2A Preseason All-State Team. However, Donnell is one of three athletes who played for Archer City last season who have transferred to Rider, including Jackson and quarterback Joe Castles.

*Page 335: The District 4-2A Division I preview picks Olney to finish fourth in what should again be a challenging district. The Cubs are picked behind defending state champion Hawley, Cisco and Stamford. Anson, Colorado City and Winters round out the district predictions.

*Page 336: The District 6-2A Division I preview predicts a second-place finish for Nocona behind only defending district champion Tioga. Alvord, Whitewright, Trenton and Tom Bean round out this district’s prognostication.

*Page 347: The District 7-2A Division II preview has Windthorst remaining at the top of the district followed by Archer City, Seymour, Haskell, Petrolia, Munday and Electra. There is some inconsistency here with Seymour ranked ahead of Archer City in the preseason state poll. And while he’s not mentioned in the team preview, Jackson is listed as the Preseason Offensive MVP. The Preseason Defensive MVP went to Windthorst senior defensive back Kolby Teakell.

*Page 357: Defending state champion Benjamin is ranked No. 1 in the Class A Division II preseason state poll. Newcastle comes in at No. 9 with Throckmorton slotted at No. 13. Knox City is the area’s only team ranked in Class A Division I at No. 6.

*Page 359: Benjamin’s Grayson Rigdon was an easy choice for Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. Rigdon also got the nod at spreadback on the Class A Preseason All-State Team. The Mustangs are picked to repeat as Class A Division II state champions, defeating Jayton in the region finals along the way.

District 7-A Division II is listed among the three to watch in the state, noting Throckmorton as the favorite.

*Page 361: Knox City is chosen to win District 4-A Division I with running back Caleb Arrieta listed as the Preseason Offensive MVP. Northside is picked fourth with Turkey Valley and Spur chosen second and third, respectively.

*Page 363: The District 9-A Division I preview places Bryson in third and just outside the playoffs behind Gordon and Gorman. Perrin-Whitt, Baird and Lingleville round out the district prediction.

*Page 369: Benjamin is obviously chosen to win District 6-A Division II, and Rigdon is the Preseason Offensive MVP. Crowell, Harrold and Chillicothe are picked third, fourth and fifth with Paducah nabbing the district’s second playoff spot.

*Page 370: Throckmorton is favored to win District 7-A Division II with running back Jacob Gaspar chosen as Preseason Offensive MVP and linebacker Hayden Makovy picked as Preseason Defensive MVP. Woodson is picked to finish second followed by Rule, Lueders-Avoca and Paint Creek.

Newcastle is chosen to win District 8-A Division II with spreadback Isaac King as Preseason Offensive MVP and linebacker Ty Strawbridge as Preseason Defensive MVP. Gold-Burg and Forestburg are predicted to miss the playoffs, finishing third and fourth, respectively, behind Strawn in second.

*Page 388: Wichita Christian is picked third in the three-team TAPPS Six-Man Division III District 1 behind Lubbock Kingdom Prep and Lubbock Christ the King.

COLLEGE

*Page 96: Former Rider standout Jacob Rodriguez is listed as the starting weakside linebacker for the Texas Tech Red Raiders. “...and (head coach Joey) McGuire expects a big year from junior Jacob Rodriguez.”

*Page 142: Former Hirschi standout Chris Murray is mentioned as a pass rushing option for Sam Houston in its first season competing at the FBS level in Conference USA. “Chris Murray transferred in from TCU and the sophomore should provide another pass rushing option.”

*Page 164-165: Midwestern State is picked to finish fifth in the Lone Star Conference. “The Mustangs could make a push for the playoffs if they defend their home turf and split their four challenging road contests.”

*Page 170: Former Graham quarterback Tucker Horn is listed as a primary reason Division III program Trinity University could be in store for a third consecutive Southern Athletic Association championship. Horn will be entering his third season leading the Tigers’ offense.
