Dodgers place Freese (hamstring) on 10-day IL

The Los Angeles Dodgers placed infielder David Freese on the 10-day injured list because of a left hamstring strain Sunday.

Freese, 36, is hitting .308 with eight homers and 23 RBIs in 56 games this season. He mostly has played first base along with a pair of games at third base.

The Dodgers promoted catcher Will Smith from Triple-A Oklahoma City to take Freese's spot on the roster. The 24-year-old Smith hit .286 (6 for 21) with one double, two homers and three RBIs in six games with the Dodgers earlier this season.

In 49 games at Oklahoma City, he hit .291 with 14 home runs and 39 RBIs.
