Dodge wins region appeal, GHSA denies Brantley

Nov. 20—THOMASTON — One area region had changes after the Georgia High School Association heard appeals for region placement Nov. 16.

Both Brantley County and Dodge County filed appeals to move. Dodge was successful in its challenge, which changes it from Class A Division I, Region 1 to Region 2. Region 2 is a central Georgia region. Brantley County asked to move from Class A, Division I, Region 1 to Region 3.. Brantley was denied by a 13-3 committee vote.

The amended Region 1-A in Division I is now Bacon County, Berrien, Brantley County, Fitzgerald, Jeff Davis, Thomasville and Worth County.

The GHSA also announced sub-regions in several large regions. Though Region 1-6A is the most geographically spread out, there will not be a sub-region for it. Tift County, Colquitt County, Lowndes, Valdosta, Camden County, Richmond Hill and Effingham County will be playing one other in every sport they all field teams.

Region 2-A in Division II is also being kept intact with Atkinson County, Brooks County, Charlton County, Clinch County, Echols County, Irwin County, Lanier County and Turner County.

In other GHSA news, the committee also discussed power ratings at the Nov. 16 meeting.

"There were many suggestions brought up during the discussion and the committee seemed to be in agreement that the formula would need some changes from the one originally presented," the minutes stated.

A "modified proposal" will be discussed at the next GHSA meeting, which will be to ratify the 2024-26 classifications and regions.
