Doc Rivers explains what Paul Reed must do to play more for Sixers

DETROIT — One of the bigger question marks on the Philadelphia 76ers continues to be the backup center position behind Joel Embiid. When they had Andre Drummond earlier in the season, he was playing pretty well filling that backup role.

However, they had to move Drummond to acquire James Harden at the deadline, and the position has been a mess since.

The team signed DeAndre Jordan on the buyout market, but his time with the Sixers has not been very good. He looks like a shell of his former self when he was an All-NBA member for the Los Angeles Clippers. The question then arises: Why doesn’t Paul Reed get a chance?

Reed is athletic and always seems to make a play on the defensive end. He’s bouncy on the glass. He has a very high motor. But coach Doc Rivers explained what Reed must do to get playing time.

“Just understanding what we’re doing and execution,” said Rivers. “It’s been an area of frustration for us, but his teammates too, but he’s getting it. He’s working at it.”

Rivers does have a point. There are times when Reed looks out of position and looks confused about where he has to be on the floor on both ends. With six games left in the season, the Sixers don’t have time for him to figure that out before the playoffs.

“I don’t focus on the things he’s not,” Rivers added of Reed. “I always focus on the things he does. He’s athletic, he gets to loose balls, those are the things he can do. The things he can’t do; we know what those are, too.”
