Dirt-track racin': Modifieds, sprints on tap at Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville

Racing of an entirely different nature can be found this week about 20 miles west of Daytona International Speedway.

Volusia County Speedway in Barberville, a dirt track billed as the “World’s Fastest Half Mile,” is host to the Germfree Southern Sprint Car Shootout Thursday through Saturday night.

Grandstands open at 5 p.m. and hot laps start at 6 each night.

Three-quarter modifieds and “360” sprint cars will be alternating heats and main events over the three nights.

Defending champion Tyler Clem returns this week, as does veterans Austin McCarl, Justin Peck, Ryan Timms and defending Daytona 500 champ Ricky Stenhouse, who mixes in several dirt-track diversions during the NASCAR season.

The Shootout precedes the two-week Dirtcar Nationals at Volusia, scheduled for Feb. 5-17.
