Difficult fight over signing bonus likely in Martin case
One of the major pending issues in the saga of Dolphins offensive tackle Jonathan Martin is what Miami may try to do about the $1.919 million signing bonus he received in 2012. Under terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, the team could ask for a significant portion of the signing bonus back because Martin has left the team.
However, it is likely Miami will face an arduous legal fight if it does attempt to get the money back. The Dolphins would likely be facing a lawsuit based on allowing a hostile working environment. The team may face that anyway, but any attempt to get money back from Martin will almost assuredly set legal maneuvers in motion.
Additionally, the NFL will likely have to determine what measures it will take as a matter of precedent.
