How did the Rutgers Olympic sports do this week?

For Rutgers Athletics, this past week included wins and highlight reel plays. That isn’t a bad combination smack dab in the middle of Big Ten action.

While football had the week off, every other fall sport was still in action. Volleyball continued to struggle, but men’s and women’s soccer were both able to record a win.

Heading into mid-October, men’s soccer is sixth in the Big Ten, but they only trail fifth-place Penn State by one game. However, for women’s soccer, they are still in the top ten nationally. If the fall season were to end today, they would be the third-best team in the Big Ten.

Field hockey continued to be a bright spot, and Sophia Howard made her case for save of the year. As October marches on, however, wins are at a premium with playoffs on the horizon. For the Scarlet Knights, it was another productive week for fall athletics.

Women's Soccer

Rutgers: 13-1-2

Rutgers women’s soccer continued their impressive season with a tie and a win last week. They forced a tie with Minnesota on Tuesday in a game that featured multiple lead changes. The Scarlet Knights finished the week strong with a 2-0 win over Wisconsin. Becci Fluchel and Sara Brocious provided the offense.

Men's Soccer

Record: 6-3-5

In the second week of October, men’s soccer had mixed results. On Tuesday, they beat Stony Brook 2-0 behind a strong performance in net by Dalton Ciaran, who made four saves. However, they finished the week with a 4-3 loss to Michigan State in a game that featured seven different goal scorers.

Still has been a solid season so far for Rutgers, although all those ties could catch-up to them later in the season.

Football

Record:3-3

After suffering their third straight loss to a Big Ten opponent, Rutgers football had a week off. They will return to action Saturday against Indiana as they try to get back in the win column for the first time since September 17. Indiana has lost four straight games and, like Rutgers, has struggled against Big Ten teams with only one conference win.

Rutgers did replace their offensive coordinator over the bye week, replacing him with Nunzio Campanile as the interim.

Volleyball

Record: 7-13

October continued to be a tough month for the Scarlet Knights on the volleyball court. They were not able to win a set against Northwestern or Maryland. They will be looking to get back on track this week with matchups against Illinois and No.8 Ohio State.

Field Hockey

Record: 7-7

After starting the weekend with a 2-1 win over Northwestern, Rutgers field hockey fell to consensus top-five program Maryland 4-3 on Sunday. While the Scarlet Knights couldn’t silence the Terrapins’ offense, Sophia Howard made a top-ten-worthy save, and Rachel Houston had three assists.
