Did the grinch steal Christmas early from Eagles fans? Loss to Seahawks has fans on edge
The Philadelphia Eagles' loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Monday Night Football not only sent shockwaves through Eagles nation, it also caused many fans to unload on the team on social media.
Indeed, the temperature of Eagles fans is rising ahead of the Christmas Day matchup against division foe, the New York Giants.
But before that game, Eagles fans needed to blow off steam and work through their emotions.
Eagles fans explode on team following lackluster effort
Eagles fans — often simultaneously applauded and shamed for being some of the most passionate in the NFL — wasted no time in blasting the Eagles' effort in the 20-17 loss to the Seahawks.
A little after the final whistle, fans stampeded Facebook and X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, to let it fly on the hometown team.
And it wasn't pretty, beginning with criticism of the play of franchise quarterback Jalen Hurts.
missed a check down to Smitty earlier as well. time to have a serious conversation about Hurts now

Readers were quick to agree with a post on X by Eagles Nation which questioned Hurts' all-or-nothing quarterbacking style.
"He never checks down," responded one poster. "Swift would have 1000 yards receiving if he did."

Another responder put it on Hurts' ego.
"Jake Elliott hit a 60+ yard FG in torrential downpour but Hurts thinks it’s a good idea to bomb a 50+ yard pass with 2 timeouts," read the posters' response. "They needed 10 measly yards to be in FG range. Horrific."
X user Philly Sports Guru also wondered why Hurts chances the harder throws instead of taking what's there.
"Defenses are playing two deep safeties almost every play," read Philly Sports Guru's response. "like, how does he not see that and take the easy play."
And X user @therealdre_jack twisted the knife even deeper, using quotes from retired Philadelphia Eagle Seth Joyner in a post to label Hurts a "read merchant."
Put this on repeat:
I tried to tell #FlyEaglesFly fans that Jalen Hurts is a 1 read merchant. Can’t read a defense😭 pic.twitter.com/1IjU3Cxj4R— Andre’ Jackson 🤠 1️⃣0️⃣-4️⃣ (@therealdre_jack) December 19, 2023
Hurts' leadership questioned on social media after 'committed' comments
Postgame, Hurts said his team wasn't committed enough to win the game, which drew the expected feedback.
#Eagles QB and leader Jalen Hurts challenges his team after a tough loss at Seattle: “I don't think we're all, we're committed enough. Just got to turn it around. It’s a challenge that we have to embrace.

"Hurts, you ain't the leader; you're the problem," read one response. "Stop fumbling and throwing picks."
In another response, a poster referenced Hurts getting paid big after what was essentially one good year.
"Jalen Hurts had a good season and then got a huge contract. He needs to play better," responded X user @RealJC89. "He’s not living up to that contract right now. Maybe he’s not as great/elite as people think."
The criticisms of Hurts and the Eagles weren't limited to X, as fans also took to Facebook to lament the state of their team.
One person responded that this current flameout by the Philadelphia Eagles is on par with the epic 1964 collapse by the Philadelphia Phillies.
"This as bad a collapse in football as the 1964 Phillies collapse in baseball! To go from leading the division by a bunch to becoming barely a wild card contender is excruciating to watch," read the response. "They are playing lifeless football now, and I don't see them even winning against a weak team! They are completely lost, and whoever we play in the playoffs, we are going to get freaking destroyed playing like we are now!"
Eagles fans turn attention to Christmas Day matchup against the New York Giants
Even still, Eagles fans have slowly turned their attention to the Eagles' next game, a home date against the Giants on Christmas Day, even if they still haven't completely gotten over the loss to the Seahawks.
"Disappointing on the Eagles Team! Just disappointing!! Runs stopped, Eagles defense meltdown, Intercepted a lot, Offense Play-calling OMG!" read user @JustinMixon2's response to a post about the Christmas matchup. "Good game Seahawks! Congrats (Just like the Jets at the end). This stings man. Next up: The New York Giants on Christmas Day Monday 12/25."
