Diamondbacks' challenges lead to crucial overturned calls in Game 1 vs. Brewers

Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo greets players before Game 1 of their National League wildcard baseball game against the Milwaukee Brewers on Oct. 3, 2023, in Milwaukee.

The Diamondbacks have gotten some huge plays in Game 1 of their NL Wild Card series against the Brewers. Corbin Carroll, Ketel Marte and Gabriel Moreno have all hit key home runs. Evan Longoria has made a pair of critical defensive plays. But the contributor of the game might be Allen Campbell, a team staffer who runs their video reviews.

In the first six innings, Campbell called for a pair of replay reviews, both of which went the Diamondbacks’ way in massive situations as they lead, 4-3.

With the bases loaded and no outs in the fifth inning, Ryne Nelson was ruled to have hit Brice Turang on the back foot with a slider. There was not a clear angle that definitively showed Turang had not been hit, but the Diamondbacks risked a challenge anyway. Using a pair of replays in combination, the play was overturned and Nelson went on to strike Turang out swinging, saving at least one run if not more.

An inning later, William Contreras hit a slow bouncer to third that Evan Longoria charged hard but lost on the transfer. The bobble seemed to put runners on first and second with no outs before Longoria turned and fired to second, where Christian Yelich had strayed off the bag.

Initially, Yelich was called safe thanks to an acrobatic slide, but upon review, Ketel Marte was ruled to have nabbed him on the right arm. Again, the overturn was not obvious, but the Diamondbacks’ risk paid off.

Their replay skills eventually did run out in the seventh inning. Corbin Carroll was called out attempting to steal second base with two outs, which was upheld due to inconclusive evidence after the Diamondbacks tried their luck on a third challenge in as many innings.
