The Deuce computes his winners for local teams' state regional football games

What catches your eyes for state first-round regional playoff football matchups?

Have you waited for Joe Curley's breakdown of Saturday's games between Simi Valley at Central Valley Christian and St. Bonaventure at St. Augustine?

The Deuce will open Friday's Star sports section — just like you — to read his assessment.

Do the teams' won-loss records mean that much?

Are you comparing stats?

Common opponents? Hey, this isn't the NFL or the Big Ten Conference. Don't bother looking (although the Deuce did take a peek out of habit).

As the Deuce has aged — not gracefully, mostly stumbling along the say from year to year — he has looked more closely at computer ratings.

Like them or not, those ratings placed teams in divisions and delivered with many close games. Fewer blowout scores, which were common back in the Deuce's day.

Central Valley Christian's only loss was to state power Clovis North.

The computer gives Central Valley Christian the edge over Simi Valley.

On closer inspection, Simi Valley will be the second-highest computer-ranked team on Central Valley's schedule.

Simi Valley has faced seven teams with better ratings than Central Valley Christian's second-best opponent to date. And four rated higher than Central Valley Christian, including St. Bonaventure and Oaks Christian on successive weeks.

The Deuce's head is spinning.

What to do? What to do?

St. Bonaventure 21, St. Augustine 17 (Division 1-A at Mesa College, 7 p.m.): Figures to be another close one for the Seraphs. Jeremiah Barrios, Matt Perez, Dylan Dunst are among the St. Bonaventure defensive leaders.

Simi Valley 34, at Central Valley Christian 27 (Division 2-A, 6 p.m.): The destiny of longest and most successful season in Simi Valley's history could be determined on how well the Pioneers defense contains a running back who has gained 2,700 yards and scored 41 TDs. Defense has stood the test thus far.
