J.V. REUNION? Justin Verlander says 'fate' will decide if he returns to Detroit Tigers before retirement

Game notes: The Detroit Tigers have lost three straight series. Before that, they had won four series in a row. Entering Monday, they're exactly .500 at 20-20. Through 40 games, the Tigers are the epitome of average, and in a division that has been much better than many expected, they'll have to be a lot better over the final 122 games. OK, you know what, there's a lot of baseball left to play, but still the point stands!

As the Tigers try and start the post-40 game mark off strong, they'll do so with a tweaked starting pitching rotation (at least for now). Kenta Maeda would've normally slid into the starting role Monday, but he was placed on the 15-day injured list because of an illness and will be out for at least the next two starts (and possibly longer, as manager A.J. Hinch said Maeda will have to make a rehab start in Toledo). Step in Matt Manning, the honorary sixth member of the Tigers rotation basically since the season began.

Manning was forecasted to make the team as one of the five starting pitchers for nearly the entire offseason but was a surprise cut toward the end of spring training. Despite that, he's already made three starts for the Tigers, all as the extra call-up for doubleheader games.

In his first start this year, Manning was lights out. He didn't allow a single hit over 5⅔ innings and was able to work around four walks to keep the New York Mets scoreless but didn't get the win after the Tigers' bullpen gave up two runs in the ninth inning for the loss. In both of his other two starts this year, Manning has given up four runs with three combined home runs, which is discouraging for Manning because the homers he was giving up during spring training were one of the reasons stated by the Tigers for starting him in Triple-A Toledo.

Manning has also made three starts in four total appearances for Toledo this year, where he's posted a 3.79 ERA over 19 innings with two home runs allowed.

The good news for Manning is it won't be too big of a jump up when facing Miami on Monday, as the Marlins are just 11-31 (worst in baseball) and are essentially a glorified Triple-A team after trading Luis Arraez to the San Diego Padres (we kid, we kid ... but not really).

After Monday's game, the Tigers will play the Marlins two more times, starting with Reese Olson on the mound Tuesday and then Casey Mize going for the Tigers Wednesday.
