MISSING JV: When will Detroit ever get over the Justin Verlander reunion tease? It's hard to blame 'em

Game notes: Casey Mize had a nice bounce-back effort last time out against the Houston Astros and will now try and capitalize on that momentum when facing another one of Major League Baseball's worst teams, the Miami Marlins.

Mize was beaten up pretty good in his first start in May, giving up five runs off nine hits and a walk to the New York Yankees, but course corrected vs. the Astros, allowing just one run, five hits and two walks, with the only run coming on a solo shot from Kyle Tucker in the sixth inning.

The outing against the Astros marked the third quality start that Mize has had this year (six innings pitched, three or fewer earned runs), but only one of those starts has turned into a win.

All in all, it's hard to call Mize's first seven starts to the season anything but a success, considering what he was coming back from. Mize missed the entire 2023 season and most of the 2022 seasons while recovering from back surgery and Tommy John's surgery. For a pitcher, that's about as bad of a 1-2 punch as you can get. First and foremost, Mize has been healthy this year, and besides his first outing of the year, he's completed the fifth inning in every one of his starts. That's a positive sign of durability. But there's still a long ways to go, and for a Tigers team that struggles to score runs, especially early, they; 'll need Mize to not only stay healthy and on the mound, but to keep pitching well.

One trend the right-handed pitcher would like to reverse is a recent development; in each of his last two starts, Mize has given up a home run. Tucker's home run on May 10 ultimately didn't prove that costly, but a three-run homer from Anthony Rizzo the game before gave the Yanks a four-run lead and the Tigers were never able to recover.

If Mize can eliminate the deep ball, he's got a strong chance of putting the Tigers in a good position to knockoff the Marlins.

After Wednesday's game, the Tigers will have a day off Thursday before heading out west to face the Arizona Diamondbacks for a three-game series.
