COMING SUNDAY: Tigers promoting RHP prospect Sawyer Gipson-Long to start Sunday vs. White Sox

Who to follow: Evan Petzold, Free Press beat writer on Tigers.

Game notes: Tarik Skubal is looking for his third straight quality start (at least six innings with fewer than three earned runs allowed), as well as his second straight against the White Sox. The lefty was dominant Sunday in Chicago, rebounding from a two-run first inning with just two hits allowed and six strikeouts over his final six innings. His final line: Seven innings, five hits, two walks and seven strikeouts. The outing was the longest of Skubal’s 11 starts since returning from last season’s flexor tendon surgery, though it was also the second straight game in which he has thrown 97 pitches.

FRIDAY'S SERIES OPENER: Detroit Tigers' bats neutered by Chicago White Sox despite Reese Olson's no-hit bid

The White Sox waited until late Friday to announce their starter for today’s game. Right-hander Michael Kopech started opposite Skubal on Sunday, but was pulled after issuing five walks and allowing two runs in less than two innings, and has been moved to the bullpen. It appears the ChiSox will call up veteran righty Jose Urena from Triple-A for the start. The former Tiger — he posted a 5.81 ERA in 26 outings (18 starts) for Detroit in 2021 — had a 9.82 ERA over 18⅓ innings (in five starts) with the Colorado Rockies earlier this season. DFA’d in late April, Urena signed a minor-league deal with the Washington Nationals and made 15 appearances with their Triple-A squad in Rochester, New York, with a 6.31 ERA in 67 innings. Released in early August, Urena had four starts with the White Sox’s affiliate in Charlotte, North Carolina. There, he was mostly effective, posting a 3.38 ERA with 20 strikeouts, seven walks in 21⅓ innings.

After tonight’s game, the Tigers and White Sox wrap up their season series with a 1:40 p.m. start Sunday at Comerica Park, with rookie right-hander Sawyer Gipson-Long set to make his MLB debut for the Tigers against White Sox righty Jesse Scholtens. The Tigers then continue their homestand, following a Monday off, with a three-game set against Cincinnati beginning Tuesday. The White Sox, meanwhile, will zip back to Chicago to open a three-game set against the AL Central cellar-dwelling Kansas City Royals on Monday.
