CARLOS MONARREZ: There’s no confusion over which Hall of Fame cap Justin Verlander will wear: Old English D

Game notes: All is not well for "The Best Fans In Baseball," as the defending NL Central champs have dropped 22 of their first 32 games this season, including six straight coming into this series. Veterans Paul Goldschmidt — who's now 35 and coming off an NL MVP season — and Nolan Gorman — who's still only 23 — are hitting, with OPSes of .896 and .887, respectively. But third baseman Nolan Arenado isn't; the seven-time All-Star picked up his 300th career homer earlier this season, but he's still bogged down with a .608 OPS.

Keep an eye on the Cards' bullpen, which is loaded with flamethrowers: Jordan Hicks and the newly called-up Guillermo Zuñiga can both deliver fastballs upwards of 100 mph, as Zuñiga did for Team Colombia in the World Baseball Classic.

After tonight's series opener, the Tigers and Cards finish it off with a pair of matinees on Saturday and Sunday, with both starting at 2:15 p.m. The Tigers then head to Cleveland for another three-game set with the Guardians, while the Cards visit their NL Central rivals, the Chicago Cubs.
