Detroit Red Wings defeats Vancouver Canucks, 6-1: Game thread replay

Game notes: The Wings start their five-game road trip — four games out West followed by a cross-country flight from Washington state to Washington, D.C., next week — with a late-night matchup against the Canucks … who they just beat in Detroit on Saturday afternoon. What might change? The Canucks went with Spencer Martin in net, and he stopped just 20 of 25 shots, even worse than his season stats: a 3.99 goals-against average and .871 save percentage. Then again, third-stringer Colin Delia, getting action since starter Thatcher Demko was injured in December, hasn’t been much better, at 3.27 and .887. Regardless of who’s in the crease, they’ll face a Wings offense energized by a pair of goals from Dylan Larkin and Jonatan Berggren (aka “Jonny Burgers”).

It wasn’t all bad for the Canucks in Detroit: They got a goal and an assist from Anthony Beauvillier, the veteran who came from the New York Islanders in the deal sending captain Bo Horvat to Long Island. After a slow start — two scoreless games — the 27-year-old has scored in back-to-back games, putting him one goal away from matching his 75-game total last season.
The Canucks also got a goal Saturday from three-time All-Star Elias Pettersson, moving him into the top 10 in points this season, and an assist from former Michigan star Quinn Hughes, who has points in three straight games to move into sixth in the league in assists.
After their visit to B.C., the Wings head east for a pair of games in Alberta, hitting Edmonton (and perennial MVP candidate Connor McDavid) on Wednesday and Calgary (and star center Jonathan Huberdeau) on Thursday, then return to the West Coast for a visit to the second-year Seattle Kraken. The Canucks, meanwhile, host the New York Rangers on Wednesday in a rematch of the 1994 Stanley Cup Finals; gee, wonder if they’ll break out the “Flying Skate” sweaters for that one?
