Game notes: Can the Wings actually get a California sweep? They picked up the easy win Tuesday in San Jose, knocking off the squad with the league’s worst record. They got the hard win Thursday in Los Angeles, rallying from a 2-0 deficit in the first five minutes for a hard-fought — literally in the case of Moritz Seider — 4-3 shootout victory over a Kings team that looks like a playoff contender. And tonight? It’s the third-worst team in the league: The Ducks, who (as a certain movie reminds us) always fly together — though they’ll be without prized No. 2 overall draft pick Leo Carlsson (sprained MCL — not just a “lowe-body injury!”) for another month or so.

We’ll refrain from making too many Duck jokes (Mighty or otherwise), if only because we’re pretty sure Anaheim GM Pat Verbeek — the former Red Wing known as “The Little Ball of Hate” — would quack us up if he ever read them. And also, of course, because the Ducks left the Wings with the bill in their most recent meeting, back on Dec. 18 at Little Caesars Arena in a 4-3 Anaheim victory in which the Ducks fowled their way to a 4-0 lead in the first 21:46 before the Wings feathered their way to a one-goal game in the third period.

The Ducks built that nest egg even without a contribution from arguably their most talented scorer, Trevor Zegras. The 22-year-old missed about six weeks with an, ahem, “lower-body injury” before returning Dec. 23 with a highlight-reel play: Another “Michigan” goal, paying tribute to the Mike Legg goal for the Wolverines — a species that is, yes, a little ball of hate, why do you ask? — in the 1996 NCAA tournament. Zegras has two of them in the NHL as part of his 51 career goals.

The Wings don’t have anyone with a “Michigan” goal this season, despite several, y’know, Michigan alumni (Andrew Copp, J.T. Compher and Dylan Larkin). They do have freshly minted All-Star Alex DeBrincat, though, who picked up two goals the last time the Wings and Ducks played; he’s riding a three-game goalless streak, with just two shots on goal in Thursday’s win over the Kings despite logging a season-high 22:20 of ice time. But the hottest Wing this month — in all of two games — is Daniel Sprong, who has a goal and three assists in his return to the West Coast after spending last season with the Seattle Kraken.

After tonight’s skate on the former Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim, the Wings will migrate back north to LCA for a visit from Edmonton on Thursday. The Ducks, meanwhile, take to the skies themselves for a six-game road trip to the Southeast, beginning with a Tuesday visit to Nashville.
