Deshaun Watson: Houston Texan

NFL Draft
NFL Draft

The Houston Texans made a blockbuster move by trading up from the 25th pick to number 10. Giving up next years 1st round pick netted Houston the former Clemson quarterback. It is reasonable to expect the Texans will open up the season with Watson as the starter.

A roster already flush with offensive talent, needed their quarterback and they got him. Watson is more than capable of leading an offense featuring electric wide receivers DeAndre Hopkins, Will Fuller and Jaelen Strong. There will be a learning curve to adjust the speed of the NFL, but with dynamic big play ability the adjustment period should not take too long.

Limiting interceptions will be the most important thing if he is to succeed in the NFL. Interceptions numbers of 13 in 2015 and 17 in 2016 create a cause for concern. The coaching staff will have to mentor Watson to ensure he makes better decisions and not turn the ball over. Limiting turnovers and scoring touchdowns are the most important jobs for a quarterback. Too often have the Texans trotted out a quarterback who has been sloppy with the football. Watson can’t afford to be sloppy, he needs to efficient.

In addition to monitoring his decision making while throwing the ball, it will be imperative to limit the amount of times Watson tucks the ball and runs. While his mobility will be key to his success, relying on it will end up in disaster. Too often have mobile quarterbacks come in to the league and trusted their legs more than their arms. These players have suffered numerous injuries and sub-par careers. The last thing Houston needs at this point with a roster primed for a playoff run, is another season of poor play from the quarterback position.

As long as Watson can protect the ball and avoid the injury bug, it should be an exciting season in Houston.
