DeSales basketball, behind senior Damone King, earns top seed for 22nd District Tournament

The wait was worth it for DeSales and senior standout Damone King.

The Colts and Butler (11-10) were scheduled to play about two weeks ago, but the game was postponed because of inclement weather.

King scored 24 points, leading DeSales to a 77-54 boys basketball victory Wednesday night. With the wire-to-wire win, the Colts clinched the top seed for the 22nd District Tournament.

“It was the goal to get the No. 1 seed,” coach Damien Anderson said. “We’ve gone through the district and we’re playing pretty well, but it doesn’t really mean anything unless we perform in the district tournament.”

King and Bears senior standout Dayton Williams (24 points) battled throughout. The difference was King had plenty of help on both ends of the court.

“It means a lot,” King said about guarding Williams. “Taking pride on defense is my biggest thing. Going to the next level, I know I’m not going to be the scorer on the team. End of the day, me and Dayton grew up (together). We’re cousins, so that’s like my brother.”

The Colts (18-7) received double-digit scoring from senior William Gibson (12 points), senior Brady Cummins (10 points) and senior Logan Tharp (13 points). Junior Prince Kahnplaye chipped in nine points.

“Four players in double figures? That’s big,” King said. “It should’ve been five, but if we do that every night, we do that every game, I think we can go to state easily.”

Anderson said he is proud of his seniors’ leadership.

“We’re … senior laden, nine seniors on the team,” Anderson said. “Leadership hasn’t really been (a) problem this year. Guys are working hard. When times get a little tough, they come together and pull through.”
