Deion Sanders named next head coach at Colorado

One of the hottest names in the coaching carousel has found a new home.

Deion Sanders, who led Jackson State to a 27-5 record over three seasons, has accepted the head coaching job at the University of Colorado, the university announced late Saturday night.

The move comes after Sanders led the Tigers to the SWAC Championship Game, where they defeated Southern on Saturday, 43-24. Sanders and Jackson State players skipped the postgame press conference, reportedly to return to campus to have a meeting where Sanders announced his plans to depart the program.

The official announcement by Colorado was made at 8:23 MT, saying that Sanders had accepted the job. Colorado Athletic Director Rick George says that Sanders will provide the energy that the program needs in order to compete for championships.

“There were a number of highly qualified and impressive candidates interested in becoming the next head football coach at Colorado, but none of them had the pedigree, the knowledge and the ability to connect with student-athletes like Deion Sanders,” George said in a statement.  “Not only will Coach Prime energize our fanbase, I’m confident that he will lead our program back to national prominence while leading a team of high quality and high character.”

Sanders, who received endorsements from two Auburn legends to become the Tigers’ next head coach, replaces Karl Dorrell, who went 8-15 in three seasons. Auburn decided on Hugh Freeze, who was officially introduced on Nov. 28 following a 28-day coaching search.
