Deion Sanders health update: Colorado football coach faces foot amputation if blood-flow issue remains

Former Jackson State football coach Deion Sanders found out this week he is facing bigger problems than turning around the Colorado Buffaloes this fall.

On "Thee Pregame Show" on YouTube on Wednesday, Sanders talked to doctors about finding a solution to pain in his left foot and learned he is at risk of losing the foot.

In the episode, Sanders, 55, speaks with orthopedic surgeon Ken Hunt, vascular surgeons Donald Jacobs and Max Wohlauer and Colorado athletic trainer Lauren Askevold about the lack of blood flowing in the foot. Sanders sought treatment that would get him through the upcoming season.

"You have to understand what the risks are," Jacobs told Sanders." "Things can cascade."

"I know what the risks are," Sanders said. "I only have eight toes, so I'm pretty sure I understand what it is. I don't plan on doing anymore running in my life."

Askevold asked if Sanders could lose another toe as well.

Jacobs told Askevold that Sanders could lose his foot.

Sanders missed three games at JSU in the 2021 season and had two toes amputated while coaching because of blood clots at the top of his calf. Sanders left the Mississippi school in December 2022 to become the coach at Colorado.

Wohlauer told Sanders that the doctors in Mississippi did a great job in 2021. Blood flowed to heal the wounds and everything was dialed in. Since then, the open arteries have begun to shut down.

Sanders said he wants to find a resolution during the summer before the football season starts.

"There is no easy time for me," Sanders told the doctors. "It speeds up. Now your doing recruiting, this is times for speaking engagements, commercials this is those times, right here. This is the best down time I have."

Colorado opens its season against TCU on Sept. 2.
