Late defensive stand gives No. 5 CU Buffs first win at McKale since 2015

For the first time since 2015, Colorado women’s basketball escaped the rowdy McKale Center with a win over Arizona.

The No. 5 Buffs, up only one point, forced the Wildcats into two missed shots in their final possession. Although both looks were very makeable, good teams such as Colorado usually win the battle of luck.

As Aaronette Vonleh secured the game-sealing rebound, CU improved to 12-1 (2-0 Pac-12) with the 75-74 victory.

Arizona took an eight-point lead early in the fourth quarter before the Buffs began to take control in the paint. All 23 of Colorado’s fourth-quarter points, including a combined 11 from Vonleh and Sara-Rose Smith, were either layups or free throws.

Reigning Pac-12 Player of the Week Jaylyn Sherrod scored a team-high 18 points while Quay Miller had 14 and nine rebounds, nearly tallying a double-double.

Kailyn Gilbert and Jada Williams led Arizona with 19 and 16 points, respectively.

Colorado will be at Arizona State on Sunday for a noon MT tipoff (Pac-12 Network).
