Decorah, Bettendorf and Waverly-Shell Rock dominate girls wrestling at Donnybrook Tourney
The best of the best in girls wrestling in the midwest got together for the 2023 girls Dan Gable Donnybrook Tournament and provided some fireworks this week at Xtream Arena in Coralville.
After two days of action, Decorah came out on top with 408 points two champions and two more finalists. Iowa commit Naomi Simon (first at 170 pounds), Anastasi Simon (second at 155 pounds), Kamryn Steines (first at 190 pounds) and Madysen Lippes (second at 235 pounds) led the way for the Vikings.
Waverly-Shell Rock finished second, with Kiara Djoumessi taking first place at 140 pounds. Another Hawkeye commit who helped put the Iowa women's wrestling recruiting class on full display.
Several out-of-state wrestlers came and made a splash too, coming from Illinois, Nebraska, Missouri and Minnesota to compete. Morgan Turner (105 pounds), Jaden Breeden (110 pounds), Kaylyn Harrill (125 pounds), Regan Rosseter (130 pounds), Cassandra Gonzales (135 pounds), Zoey Barber (155 pounds) and Alexis Stinson (235 pounds) all came from outside of Iowa to claim a title.
Harrill, a highly-touted freshman, took down Bettendorf senior Hannah Rogers. Rogers is one of the Des Moines Register's top 25 wrestlers in the state, going 33-4 on her way to the finals last year at 125 pounds, but Harrill lived up to her billing in that match.
