Meet Erie County's top performing athletes from the first days of spring sports seasons

The Erie Times-News, as it did for District 10’s fall and winter sports seasons, will compile lists of Erie County’s top performers throughout the remainder of spring athletics.

The lists will continue through Memorial Day weekend. That’s when the district conducts various postseason tournaments, the PIAA holds its boys tennis tournament at Hershey and its track and field championships at Shippensburg University.

Notable performers over the early days of April are:

Baseball

Jason Fultz, Cathedral Prep: He contributed as a pitcher (seven strikeouts) and a hitter (solo home run) during the Ramblers’ 15-5 victory vs. Snowflake (Arizona) in their Wolves Classic finale at Phoenix.

Andrew Costello, Cathedral Prep: The former USA Baseball player had four hits, which included a home run, and drove in six runs when the Ramblers routed Winslow (Arizona) 19-3 during the Wolves Classic at Phoenix. ... He also homered for one of his three hits and had four RBIs during Prep's 19-5 victory vs. Show Low (Arizona) earlier in the event.

Preston Lanagan, Harbor Creek: He struck out 10 batters over 6⅓ innings when the Huskies beat Russell (Kentucky) 2-0 in a spring break game.

Evan Stranko, McDowell: His two hits and five RBIs highlighted the Trojans’ 9-1 victory over Wisconsin’s St. Thomas More in a spring break game at Atlanta.

Anthony Iacobucci, McDowell: He was the winning pitcher with a five innings on the mound for the Trojans, who defeated Harlan County (Kentucky) 6-1 in the teams’ spring break game.

Caleb Szklenski, Fairview: He struck out seven Corry batters over four innings of the Tigers’ 9-2 victory vs. the Beavers.

Softball

Addison Lucas, Harbor Creek: She recorded two hits and five RBIs for the Huskies, who beat Breckenridge (Texas) 14-4 in a spring break game at Chesapeake, Virginia.

Madison Simmerman, Cathedral Prep: She was the winning pitcher and added had two hits at plate when the Ramblers defeated New Jersey’s Egg Harbor Township 11-2 in a spring break game at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Boys track and field

Garett Skinner, Fort LeBoeuf: He swept the 110- and 300-meter hurdles races when the Bison beat the visiting Mercyhurst Prep Lakers 86-61.

Girls track and field

Lauren Raimy, Cathedral Prep: She was the gold medalist for the South Hills Classic’s finals in the 800 meters (2 minutes, 21.25 seconds) and 1,600 meters (5:09.16).

Renee Hallock, Fairview: The thrower for the Tigers won the discus (114 feet, 5 inches) and was the bronze medalist for the shot put (32-10¼) during the South Hills Classic at Pittsburgh’s Baldwin High School.

Ella Corritore, Fort LeBoeuf: She won track (100 hurdles) and field events (long and high jumps) when the Bison beat Mercyhurst Prep 126-23 in a dual at Waterford.

Boys tennis

Aditya Turaga, Fairview: The No. 1 singles starter for the Tigers who won in straight sets when the beat Region 2 rival McDowell 5-0. ... He also contributed to Fairview's 4-1 non-region dual victory vs. the visiting Grove City Eagles earlier in the week.

Christian Neubert, McDowell: The junior contributed to the Trojans’ 3-2 non-region dual victory against Grove City when he won 6-0 for the third set of his No. 3 singles match.

Boys basketball

Amaree Pickens, Cathedral Prep: He scored 13 points for the West during the Erie County East-West all-star game at Penn State Behrend’s Junker Center.

Layveon Gore, Erie High: His 12 points led the East team at the Erie County East-West all-star game.

Girls basketball

Jayden McBride, Cathedral Prep: The Georgetown University recruit, in her last local varsity appearance, scored nine points for the West team in the Erie County East-West all-star game at Penn State Behrend’s Junker Center.

Arianah Reap, Erie High: She scored 11 points for the East during the Erie County East-West all-star game.
