DBacks' Ryne Nelson exits start vs. Giants with apparent injury

Ryne Nelson (19) of the Arizona Diamondbacks pitches in the bottom of the first inning against the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park on April 18, 2024 in San Francisco, California.

SAN FRANCISCO — Diamondbacks right-hander Ryne Nelson exited his start after being struck by a line drive on his pitching arm in the bottom of the second inning on Thursday night at Oracle Park.

Nelson appeared to be in significant pain after being hit by Mike Yastrzemski's line drive comebacker, but the initial diagnosis is encouraging: The Diamondbacks announced later in the game that Nelson left with a "right elbow contusion."

Nelson retrieved the ball and flipped to first for the out, but he did not return to the mound for the bottom of the third. He was replaced by left-hander Logan Allen.

It is an obviously disappointing development for Nelson, even more so because he appeared to have made recent strides in his pitch development, having finally found a reliable secondary pitch he could lean on to keep hitters off his fastball.

The injury comes only a day before the Diamondbacks were set to welcome left-hander Jordan Montgomery to the rotation. Montgomery signed a one-year, $25 million deal just before the start of the season and has been building up stamina in Triple-A Reno.
