Daytona 500 race updates, live leaderboard: William Byron wins Daytona 500

Let's try this again.

The NASCAR Cup Series is set to open the season with the 2024 Daytona 500, rescheduled for Monday afternoon after being postponed Sunday.

NASCAR rescheduled the 500 for 4 p.m. ET/3 p.m. CT Monday, with television coverage remaining on Fox. The Xfinity Series, postponed a second time Monday, will start at 8 p.m. CT/9 p.m. ET.

Joey Logano is on the pole after running the fastest lap in 500 qualifying five days ago. The Cup Series cars have not been on track since Friday's practice session following Thursday's duel qualifying races.

The weather is expected to hold up for an on-time Monday finish. Follow our live coverage of The Great American Race from Daytona:

Daytona 500 live updates: NASCAR's biggest race set for Monday

Who won the 2024 Daytona 500?

William Byron is the 2024 Daytona 500 champion. NASCAR threw the caution flag after Byron took the white flag. Hendrick Motorsports has another Daytona 500 title.

Byron did not lead a lap until after the final restart. He had never finished better than 21st in six previous Daytona 500 races.

White flag -- and a crash!

Ross Chastain and Austin Cindric wreck into the infield as William Byron takes the white flag. Is it official?

Lap 196: Green flag with four laps to go

Ross Chastain and William Byron leads 22 lead-lap cars to the green flag. Alex Bowman, Austin Cindric and Chase Elliott round out the top five. Keep an eye on Kyle Busch in 7th.

Lap 192: The Big One claims Logano, Keselowski, Hamlin, many others

Down the backstretch, William Byron got loose after getting pushed by Alex Bowman while reacting to Brad Keselowski being blocked by Ross Chastain. Keselowski and Logano wreck in front of the field, and collect at minimum of 12 cars or more.

Martin Truex Jr., Ryan Blaney and Denny Hamlin are in it, as are Daniel Suarez, Todd Gilliland, Ty Gibbs, Erik Jones, Daniel Hemric, Ryan Preece, Christopher Bell, Tyler Reddick, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Anthony Alfredo, Chase Briscoe and others. Kyle Larson is also involved.

Red flag.

"Just one of those deals at this track," Keselowski tells FOX after being released from the infield care center.

"It's speedway racing -- it's a lot of fun until it sucks," Logano said to FOX in his post-crash interview.

Lap 188: The racing is intense

The pack is three-wide from first to 24th, with Ross Chastain edging ahead with a Joey Logano push. William Byron and the Hendrick cars are trying to push below him.

FOX reports Bubba Wallace did not get enough fuel to make it to the finish so he will need to stop again.

Lap 183: Ross Chastain leads after pit stops

Ross Chastain and the Chevrolets slow the pace of the charging Fords as the former gets to speed.

Everyone is back into one pack now, with Chastain and Logano leading the two lanes. It's go time with 16 laps to go.

Lap 178: Final pit stops begin

Green flag pit stops begin with the Toyotas coming down pit road (sans Denny Hamlin).

A couple laps later, the Fords come down pit road. Next up: the Chevrolets.

No one can afford a penalty here.

Lap 165: Joey Logano leads four Fords to the front

Joey Logano, with help from David Ragan, Brad Keselowski and Chase Briscoe, has pushed past Hamlin and into the lead. The Fords are single-file, with two-wide racing starting in fifth.

A few laps ago, Kyle Busch slapped the wall after trying to fill a hole in line along the outside. Busch continues on in the top 10, but something to note.

The field is due a final pit stop soon.

Lap 160: Denny Hamlin in control

Denny Hamlin has made his way through the field and leads on the outside with help from Corey Lajoie and others. Kyle Busch, with a push from Joey Logano, leads the inside line.

Lap 140: Three-wide racing

AJ Allmendinger, Martin Truex Jr. and Chris Buescher lead the three lines, three wide 10 rows back.

Kyle Busch is already pushing into the top 10 again after his pit road issue. Time to go forward, it appears.

Kyle Busch has lugnut issue on left front, but gets it fixed

Kyle Busch's left front lugnut does not catch, and he has to slowly ride around the 2.5-mile track with his left front end dragging.

He makes it back to pit road safely, and he gets the tire changed properly. He'll start toward the back of the pack but still on the lead lap.

Daniel Suarez had an equipment penalty on his stop and will start in the back. Austin Cindric will lead the field to the green with 65 laps to go.

Ryan Blaney wins Stage 2 in the Daytona 500

Ryan Blaney passes teammate Austin Cindric in turn four to win Stage 2 and earn a playoff point.

The Stage 2 results:

  1. Ryan Blaney

  2. Austin Cindric

  3. Daniel Suarez

  4. Kyle Busch

  5. Tyler Reddick

  6. William Byron

  7. Bubba Wallace

  8. Ricky Stenhouse Jr.

  9. AJ Allmendinger

  10. Chris Buescher

Josh Berry and Ryan Preece were put a lap down in the final laps of the stage. Ty Gibbs gets the free pass.

Lap 122: Kyle Busch and Austin Cindric now in front

Three-wide racing forces Kyle Larson and Chase Elliott to the back, with Penske teammates Austin Cindric and Ryan Blaney on the inside with Kyle Busch leading the outside.

The intensity has increased at Daytona with seven laps to go until the end of Stage 2.

Lap 117: Kyle Larson leads Chase Elliott after green flag stops

Kyle Larson has the lead after pit stops, with Chase Elliott in 2nd and Corey Lajoie in 3rd.

Five cars are off the lead draft: John Hunter Nemechek, Ryan Preece, Josh Berry, Ty Gibbs and Zane Smith. 13 laps to go until the end of the stage.

Lap 112: Josh Berry spins on pit road as green flag stops begin

Green flag stops begin with the Fords and others coming into pit road. John Hunter Nemechek and Josh Berry get together on pit road, and Berry spins around. It takes him a few moments to get straightened out.

Ryan Preece is busted for a speeding penalty on pit road.

Lap 95: Todd Gilliand takes the lead from the inside line

Todd Gilliland gets a good push from Martin Truex Jr. to get clear of Joey Logano. Gilliland then moves to the top in front of Logano.

Note for the end of the race: The organized five or six cars on the bottom line have been fast enough to move to the front. Is that a product of Truex as a pusher or can any organized group move forward? We'll see.

Jimmie Johnson goes four laps down. He is unable to catch onto the draft and has struggled since the early multi-car crash.

Lap 89: Joey Logano leads in the high line

Polesitter Joey Logano leads the organized high line, with Justin Haley second. The inside line is outnumbered but trying to catch up to the front two with some side drafting.

Michael McDowell is now running laps about five seconds off the pace and is well off the lead draft.

Michael McDowell is losing power

Michael McDowell reports he may be losing power in his No. 34 Front Row Motorsports Ford. He had the hood up during the stage break. More to come.

Lap 71: Josh Berry, Kyle Larson trade the lead following restart

Josh Berry and Kyle Larson trade the lead for the first couple laps after the restart. The Hendersonville native has been competitive so far in his first race as a full-time Cup driver.

Here comes Joey Logano on the outside for a three-wide battle for the lead, and he'll take it.

Kyle Busch earns pit road penalty for a safety violation

The rest of the field pits as pit road opens a lap later. Kyle Busch and John Hunter Nemechek both have penalties during their stops, and Tyler Reddick has issues getting his car back going after being low on fuel pre-stop.

Michael McDowell has hood up following Stage 1

David Ragan and Ryan Preece come in before pit road is open after stretching their fuel run for more than 50 laps in Stage 1. Also in is 2021 Daytona 500 champion Michael McDowell, who was struggling to keep pace during the end of the stage. The hood is up on his Ford.

Chase Elliott wins Stage 1

That's a good start for Chase Elliott in 2024, getting the lead with a nifty move to the outside past Kyle Busch and holding off his Hendrick Motorsports teammates along with Ross Chastain at the green-and-white flag.

Elliott gets the first playoff point of the season and 10 regular season points.

The Stage 1 results:

  1. Chase Elliott

  2. Kyle Larson

  3. Ross Chastain

  4. Alex Bowman

  5. William Byron

  6. Kyle Busch

  7. Denny Hamlin

  8. Bubba Wallace

  9. Martin Truex Jr.

  10. Daniel Suarez

Lap 61: Two cars still haven't pit

Now it's just David Ragan and Ryan Preece who appear to be trying to make it on fuel with the others diving to pit road Their pace is not nearly fast enough to stay ahead of the lead pack led by Kyle Busch.

Lap 59: Six cars have stayed out; will they try to make it on fuel to the end of Stage 1?

Six cars have not come in to pit during this green flag run. Noah Gragson, Todd Gilliland, Josh Berry, Justin Haley, David Ragan and Ryan Preece are those six, with the top three in the lead draft.

Lap 55: Leaders are pitting

A group of Chevrolets, including leader Chase Elliott, dive down to pit road for fuel.

Was the earlier pace slow enough for someone to try to make it to the end of Stage 1 on fuel? It would impact Ryan Blaney, Daniel Hemric, Christopher Bell and Michael McDowell, who are now a lap down after pitting earlier.

Lap 42: Some green flag stops

The Penske cars plus a few others who did not pit during the first caution will pit a little earlier than the rest of the field.

The main pack has gotten mixed up a bit now, with Chase Elliott now leading.

Lap 32: A four-car breakaway

Ryan Blaney leads a four-car breakaway with Daniel Hemric, Christopher Bell and Joey Logano. The quartet had about a second lead over the pack, but now the lead pack has organized itself to catch back up.

Lap 28: It's never too early to conserve fuel

The field is still two-by-two, and drivers are easing off the gas to conserve fuel with 37 laps to go before the end of Stage 1. The field is lagging so far behind top speed that AJ Allmendinger is faster than the draft despite riding without drafting help.

Denny Hamlin, Martin Truex Jr. and others have mentioned the relative snail's pace of the lead pack at the moment. Will someone take advantage and up the pace to take the lead?

Lap 19: Christopher Bell, Ryan Blaney trade the lead as side-by-side racing continues

The field appears content to run two-by-two after the early crash, and that's a logical way to run early on. Christopher Bell and Ryan Blaney lead the two lines in the draft.

AJ Allmendinger has lost the lead draft after having to go back to the end of the longest line for a choose-cone violation during the last restart.

Lap 15: Former 500 winner Austin Dillon to the garage after early crash

Austin Dillon takes his No. 3 Chevrolet to the garage after making minimum speed following the restart. The former Daytona 500 winner won't add another to his resume.

Kaz Grala, Carson Hocevar and Harrison Burton are all done for the day. Early end to the 500 for those young drivers.

Lap 9: Jimmie Johnson goes 2 laps down

Johnson's No. 84 Legacy Motor Club Toyota is now two laps down as his team makes repairs. Johnson took a pretty good shot to the front end and left front in the incident.

Austin Dillon was also getting some repairs after getting some minimal damage. Most of the field comes down pit road for stops; Christopher Bell will lead the field to the restart after not pitting.

Lap 6: Jimmie Johnson, Harrison Burton involved in multi-car crash

In the forming third outside line coming off of turn 4, John Hunter Nemechek gets free off of a bump from Brad Keselowski and slams into Harrison Burton. Burton and Carson Hocevar spin down into the infield grass and come back up onto the track. collecting Jimmie Johnson, Kaz Grala and Ryan Preece.

Preece didn't get too much damage, and Nemechek's car is clean. Hocevar, Grala and Burton had the most damage. Burton's No. 21 Wood Brothers Ford is done for the day, as is Hocevar's Spire Motorsports Chevrolet.

The rest of the field is fortunate that the crash wasn't larger; Burton, Hocevar and Nemechek were inside the top 15.

Nothing Johnson could do there as Hocevar slid back up the track. Daytona is often about luck, and Johnson doesn't have the luck today.
