Dartmouth football coach Buddy Teevens has leg amputated after bicycling accident

Dartmouth football coach Buddy Teevens had his right leg amputated after a bicycling accident, his wife, Kirsten, said in a statement released through the school on Tuesday.

Teevens, an "avid cyclist," was involved in a collision while he was out cycling last month. He was hospitalized with what, at the time, were described as "serious injuries."

In offering an update on his recovery, Kirsten revealed the leg injury and also said that he suffered spinal cord injuries.

"As Buddy navigates through the healing of his injuries, he is experiencing many positive improvements. Unfortunately, as a result of the accident, Buddy's right leg was amputated due to the severity of the injury," she said. "He is alert and communicating with us and ready for transfer to a premier rehab facility to continue healing. Spinal cord injuries are challenging, and if anybody is up for the challenge, it is Buddy. We appreciate your continued respect of our privacy as we navigate this ongoing recovery process as a family."

Teevens has served as the head coach of the Big Green football team twice, with his most recent campaign starting in 2005. He had stints at Tulane and Harvard in between times at his alma mater.

Teevens played quarterback for Dartmouth in the 1970s, leading them to the Ivy League championship in 1978. He has added five titles as a coach and was named Ivy League Coach of the Year in 2021.

Famed NFL quarterback Eli Manning was among those who sent Teevens well wishes upon hearing the news of his accident.

"Thoughts and prayers are with Coach Teevens and his family," Manning said on Twitter. "I have known Coach since I was 12 years old when I attended Tulane football camp. There is not a better man."
