Darryl Strawberry: Mets 'must sign' Pete Alonso to a long-term contract

With Pete Alonso's future still up in the air as the slugger enters his last year of team control, Darryl Strawberry took to Instagram to urge the Mets to extend the first baseman to a long-term deal on Thursday.

"The Mets must sign Peter Alonso to a long-term contract," Strawberry wrote. "He will become the all-time home run leader for the franchise. Only a handful of homegrown every day [sic] players have thrived in the pressure of New York City, and Alonso has shown he has what it takes.

"Just like David Wright, Jose Reyes, and Myself, don’t let Pete go. Keep your homegrown talent!"

In his six seasons with the Mets, Alonso has hit 192 home runs, which puts him in a tie with Howard Johnson for fourth all-time in the franchise's history. Only behind Mike Piazza's 220, Wright's 242 and Strawberry's 252.

As of right now, Alonso – a three-time All-Star and former Rookie of the Year – is set to become a free agent after the 2024 season.
