The New York Giants secondary will be without safety Darian Thompson when they take on the Washington Redskins on Sunday.

Thompson, the 71st overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft out of Boise State, missed practice on Thursday with a foot injury. He was stepped on by one of his teammates in the Giants’ 16-13 victory over the New Orleans Saints.

He played 45 snaps against the Saints. Although he left the game with a stinger, he did play through the foot injury.

Thompson tried to practice on Wednesday but was a last minute addition to the injury report. On Thursday, he was wearing a boot on his foot. The Giants said that he will be evaluated on a week-to-week basis.

This was not the news that Thompson wanted to hear, especially since Thursday was his 23rd birthday.

He will have more tests on Monday to determine the severity of his injury. The Giants are concerned that Thompson suffered a Lisfranc injury but are hoping that he will only miss this week’s game against the Redskins and a Week 4 matchup at the Minnesota Vikings.

Thompson’s injury is a huge blow to the Giants’ defense. His emergence at the free safety position allowed fellow safety Landon Collins to play closer to the line of scrimmage, where he is most effective.

Thompson’s absence will leave the Giants short on safeties. Mykkele Thompson was placed on season-ending injured reserve with a knee injury earlier in the week.

Nat Berhe will start against the Redskins on Sunday. He split time with Thompson in the season opener against the Dallas Cowboys as Thompson was recovering from a shoulder injury. Behre played 35 snaps against the Cowboys to Thompson’s 43.

Berhe played 17 snaps against the Saints to Thompson’s 45. So far this season, Berhe has more tackles (eight) to Thompson (seven) despite playing 36 fewer snaps.

Rookie Andrew Adams will more than likely be elevated from the practice squad. Cornerback Leon Hall could potentially see action at the safety position if the Giants don’t sign another safety.
