Daniel Cormier ponders heavyweight division’s future if Jon Jones dominates Stipe Miocic: ‘It’s a scary thought’

Daniel Cormier isn’t sure the heavyweight division will have anything left to offer Jon Jones if he runs through Stipe Miocic.

After quickly submitting Ciryl Gane to capture the vacant heavyweight belt at UFC 285, Jones (27-1 MMA, 21-1 UFC) is expected to face Miocic (20-4 MMA, 14-4 UFC) next, potentially at UFC 290 on July 8.

Miocic is a former two-time UFC heavyweight champion and holds the record for most title defenses in divisional history at three. Jones vowed to also dominate NCAA Division I wrestler Miocic, and if he does end up doing so against the consensus greatest heavyweight of all time, Cormier worries for the rest of the division.

“Jones has an ability on the ground that a lot of heavyweights maybe haven’t seen before,” Cormier said on his YouTube channel. “Ciryl looked shocked. Stipe Miocic will not be shocked when he’s locked in the octagon with Jon Jones. But Jon Jones will not be shocked fighting the greatest heavyweight of all time, at least in most people’s opinions.

“Jon Jones’ debut was as good as it gets guys. For him, his team, and the UFC and as I stated, Stipe will be tougher. But let me pose this question to you, say Jones does what he promises again, dominates Stipe, then the question becomes who could challenge him in this division? It’s a scary thought.”

Jones opened up as a sizable favorite over Miocic. Oddsmakers have the champion as a -290 favorite, meaning a $290 bet would be needed on the champion to return $100. Meanwhile, Miocic is a +235 underdog, meaning a $100 bet on the challenger would win $235.
