Dana White: Robbie Lawler to retire after UFC 290 fight with Niko Price

Robbie Lawler will say farewell to MMA competition at UFC 290, according to UFC president Dana White.

Former UFC welterweight champion Lawler (29-16 MMA, 14-10 UFC) will step into the cage for the final time on July 8 when he takes on Niko Price (15-6 MMA, 7-6 UFC) at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

“I found Robbie Lawler when he was 19 years old,” White said Wednesday during a UFC 290 announcement. “UFC 290 will be final fight of his amazing 22 year career.”

Lawler made his professional debut in April 2001. In addition to being his UFC swan song, this year’s International Fight Week will be particularly special for “Ruthless.” Lawler will join the fight wing of the UFC Hall of Fame roughly 24 hours prior to competition as his epic UFC 189 battle with Rory MacDonald from July 2015 will be enshrined.

Lawler, 41, has struggled to find positive results in recent years. He’s lost five of his past six bouts overall ahead of his UFC 290 retirement fight.
