The Arizona Cardinals defense made plays when it needed to and the offense took care of the ball in a 28-16 win over the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday at State Farm Stadium.

The Cardinals limited the Cowboys to one touchdown and a trio of field goals.

Arizona led 21-10 at the half, and unlike last week against the New York Giants, didn't fall apart in the second half.

Quarterback Josh Dobbs finished 17-for-21 passing for 189 yards and a touchdown. James Conner had 14 carries for 98 yards and a touchdown. Michael Wilson had two catches for 86 yards and Hollywood Brown added five catches for 61 yards and a touchdown.

Kyzir White led the defense with 14 tackles and an interception.

Matt Prater was 3-for-3 on field goal attempts.

The Cardinals play at the San Francisco 49ers next week.

Cardinals interception adds exclamation point

With the Cowboys again knocking at the end zone, the Cardinals defense made another stop.

This one game in the form of an interception by Kyzir White, who snatched the ball out of the air and took a knee in the end zone with 3 minutes left in the game.

The Cardinals will start with first-and-10 from their own 25.

Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is now 25-for-40 for 249 yards with one TD and an interception.

Cardinals add quick score

Josh Dobbs was falling down as he threw the ball and Hollywood Brown was falling as he caught it in the end zone. But the play was enough for the Cardinals to add to their lead over the Cowboys.

The Cardinals are up 28-16 with 7:22 to play.

The touchdown was set up by a 69-yard pass to Michael Wilson a few plays earlier.

Now, the Cardinals are just minutes away from their first win of the season.

Cowboys cut into Cardinals lead

Brandon Aubrey kicked a 26-yard field goal that cut the Cardinals lead to 21-16.

The field goal came after the Arizona defense made another stop inside the Cardinals 10.

This time the Cowboys had first-and-goal at the Arizona 10. A 2-yard run was followed by a pass for no gain and an incompletion.

The field goal was the third of the game for Aubrey.

Turnover on downs

After again marching quickly down the field, the Cowboys stuttered inside the Arizona 20 once again.

Facing a third-and-3 from the Arizona 4, Dak Prescott fumbled for a 5-yard loss. An offensive holding call backed the Cowboys up another 5 yards, which set them up for a third-and-14 from the 14. A 10-yar pass made it fourth-and-3 from the Arizona 4.

Instead of taking the points from the short field goal, the Cowboys went for it with Prescott's pass falling incomplete.

Given the ball on the 4, the Cardinals weren't able to do much more than punt.

They returned the ball to the Cowboys at the Dallas 36.

Cardinals LB Zaven Collins exits with injury

The Cardinals lost one of their top defensive players, linebacker Zaven Collins, at least for some time during Sunday's game against the Dallas Cowboys.

Collins went down in obvious pain following a Cowboys offensive play during their drive for a field goal to open the second half. It was later announced he has an eye injury

Collins left the field and went directly into the pop-up medical tent and was inside for several minutes before emerging and walking to the locker room with a trainer.

Collins has two tackles, including a sack, in the game. His return to the game is questionable.

Cardinals defense bends

The Cowboys added a 27-yard field goal from Brandon Aubrey on their first drive of the second half.

Dallas made quick work getting into the Arizona 25, but the Cardinals' defense stepped up. Tony Pollard had a 3-yard carry to the Arizona 8, but Dak Prescott threw consecutive incompletions to set up the field goal.

Cardinals 21, Cowboys 13 (8:52, third quarter)

Cardinals lead Cowboys at the half

The Arizona Cardinals carry an 21-10 lead into the second half against the Dallas Cowboys.

Matt Prater kicked a 62-yard field goal as the first half ended that narrowly passed the crossbar.

Through the first half, the Cardinals are putting up better numbers than the Cowboys in total yards (266-153), sacks (2-1), rushing yards (182-69), penalties (45-72) and first downs (14-11).

Time of possession is nearly even (Cardinals 15:04, Cowboys 14:56).

Baseball Hall-of-Famer Ken Griffey Jr.  was on hand as a  credentialed photographer, working the same sideline as the Cardinals' bench. Griffey knows his craft — he photographed soccer star Lionel Messi at a game in South Florida in late August — and was taking pictures thanks to a partnership between the National Baseball Hall of Fame and the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Griffey got his own photo taken with Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray before the game and greeted his son Trey, who works in the Cardinals community relations department and played in college at Arizona.

Points off the board

For the second time in the game, the Cardinals points off the scoreboard following a penalty by the Cowboys.

After a first-quarter touchdown, Matt Prater kicked a point after through the uprights. Dallas was offsides on the play. Arizona accepted the penalty and attempted a 2-point conversion from the 1. That attempt failed. Had the Cardinals declined the penalty, the point after would have stood.

Late in the first half, the Cardinals again saw points come off the board. This time, a 51-yard field goal by Prater was nullified by a offsides penalty against Dallas. The 5-yard penalty gave the Cardinals a first down. They were unable to move the ball any further. However, the outcome was the same as Prater kicked a 43-yard field goal.

Cardinals 18, Cowboys 10 (1:28, second quarter)

Cowboys offense starts clicking

After sputtering for nearly the entire first half, the Dallas offense started clicking and put together a 15-play, 75-yard drive that cut into the Cardinals lead 15-10.

Dak Prescott completed a 15-yard pass to Rico Dowdle for the touchdown. The Cowboys did a little of everything on the drive. Tony Pollard carried the ball four times for 26 yards and Prescott completed passes to Jake Ferguson, CJ Lamb, Brandin Cooks, Michael Gallup and finally Dowdle.

Cardinals 15, Cowboys 10 (5:28, second quarter)

Cardinals double lead

Rondale Moore sprinted 45 yards through the Cowboys defense and into the end zone to double the Cardinals lead.

The seven-play drive covered 75 yards and took 4:11 off the clock. Moore's run was just a fraction of that time — 6 seconds.

Arizona's 2-point conversion attempt failed.

Cardinals 15, Cowboys 3 (12:31, second quarter)

Josh Dobbs solid in first quarter

The first quarter ended with the Cardinals leading the Cowboys 9-3.

Arizona quarterback Josh Dobbs is 5-for-6 passing for 42 yards. He has not been sacked. His biggest play was a 44-yard run that put the Cardinals in field goal position on their first drive. Dobbs has two carries for 51 yards.

Cardinals defense doing good things

The Cardinals defense limited the Cowboys to a 49-yard field goal on the visitor's second possession of the game.

During the 10-play, 44-yard drive, Cowboys' quarterback Dak Prescott was sacked twice. He is 5-for-7 for 47 yards in the game. The two sacks have cost the Cowboys 18 yards.

Tony Pollard is the only Cowboy with rushing yards. He has 10 on three carries.

Victor Dimukeje has two tackles, including a sack. Krys Barnes also has two tackles, while Zaven Collins has a sack.

Cardinals 9, Cowboys 3 (1:48, first quarter)

James Conner adds to Cardinals lead

A 5-yard run by James Conner gave the Cardinals a 9-0 lead over the visiting Dallas Cowboys.

The Cardinals failed a 2-point conversion attempt from the 1.

Conner caught a 10-yard pass from Dobbs to set up the score. Conner has five carries for 33 yards.

Cardinals 9, Cowboys 0 (6:12, first quarter)

Cardinals get scoring started against Cowboys

The Arizona Cardinals received the opening kickoff.

The first play for the Cardinals was a 2-yard pass from Josh Dobbs to Trey McBride. The second play was much better as Dobbs ran 44 yards. The drive stalled there and Arizona settled for a 39-yard field goal from Matt Prater.

Dallas couldn't move the ball on its first possession. Penalties for a false start and a delay of game backed the Cowboys up, so they punted from their own 20.
