CVU's Everett caps standout career with rare feat at Make-A-Wish All-Star Hockey Classic

After playing the maximum number of varsity seasons, Tess Everett crammed in three Twin State all-star games over two weekends.

And Everett wouldn't have had any other way.

"I am going to miss it. I had a really fun high school career," Everett said.

And to close out a multi-sport career, the Champlain Valley Union High School senior, fittingly, had one more influential performance, depositing an early goal and handing out two assists to help Vermont rout New Hampshire 5-1 in Saturday's Make-A-Wish All-Star Hockey Classic at Gutterson Fieldhouse.

Everett also represented Vermont in the Twin State field hockey and lacrosse games last weekend, making Saturday's contest a rare third appearance for one athlete in the summer series between Vermont and New Hampshire's recently graduated senior standouts.

While there isn't a definitive list of seniors who have played in multiple Twin State games, athletes have pulled off double duty on a number of occasions over the years. But to land on three teams takes athleticism and talent and no scheduling conflicts with other Twin State showdowns. Last year, for example, Twin State hockey and lacrosse were played on the same Saturday.

One recent case: Former CVU star Lydia Maitland, who played the same three Twin State contests as Everett did back in 2018.

"It was my goal to see if I could make all three teams," Everett said. "It was really nice to end my senior year and play one more game in each sport."

Everett picked up 11 varsity letters at the Hinesburg school. It would've been a dozen letters but, like every high school athlete, she missed out on the 2020 spring season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Over her career, she was a multiple Free Press all-state selection in field hockey and hockey and a two-time Division I coaches' all-state midfielder in lacrosse.

To wrap her field hockey run last fall, Everett was named the Free Press' player of the year after guiding CVU to an elusive title for the Redhawks and coach Tucker Pierson.

"I don’t know if it’s really set in yet, that it’s completely over. It’s a little bittersweet," said Everett, who will continue her field hockey career at Williams College in the fall.

To start Saturday's contest, BFA-St. Albans' Seneca Lamos raced down the right side and took a shot that slid past the New Hampshire goalie for a 1-0 lead less than 3 minutes in. Everett followed about two minutes later with a rebound tally and then Woodstock's Isabel Konijnenberg, the Vermont MVP, unleashed a blue-line laser for a 3-0 lead at the close of the period.

In the second frame, Essex's Abigale Smith blasted in a slapshot from a tight angle, while Spaulding's Rebecca McKelvey, the Free Press' Miss Hockey award winner, unloaded a lefty screamer following a Vermont faceoff win to push the advantage to 5-0.

Jill Scanlon tallied New Hampshire's lone goal in the third period.

In addition to Everett's multi-point game, U-32's Caitlyn Fielder picked up two assists and Burlington/Colchester's Karissa LeClair and Georgia Wool also had helpers. In the Vermont net, Sam Plunkett (Rice) and Rayna Long (Spaulding) split time and combined to make nine saves.

Vermont has won the last three games vs. New Hampshire and now leads the all-time series 12-10-3.

The New Hampshire boys overcame a two-goal deficit to snatch a 5-2 triumph over Vermont in the nightcap of Saturday's Make-A-Wish All-Star Hockey Classic at Gutterson Fieldhouse.

New Hampshire used a pair of power play goals in the third period to take a 3-2 lead. The Granite State then added two goals, one on an empty-netter, in the final 5:12 to seal its third straight win over Vermont in the summer series.

Aidan Palmeter struck for two goals, including the go-ahead tally, to pick up MVP honors for the New Hampshire side.

Rice's Matthew Senesac flicked in the game's opening goal at 11:40 of the first period and Essex's Brendan DuBray scored on a sweet wraparound chance at 9:37 of the second to give Vermont a 2-0 edge.

Rice's Jackson Strong, Essex's Drew Forcier and Colchester's Evan Baird had assists while Essex's Ian Boutin (eight saves) and Rice's Andrew Libby (11 saves) shared time in the Vermont net.

Boutin was named Vermont's MVP. New Hampshire leads the series 20-9-1.
